Hello all im wanting to get into some informal precision shooting and am looking at this savage model(the one with the mcMillan a2 stock i think). Anybody have this exact same rifle? I have a bushnell legend 5-15X40 mill dot that I would put on it for now(and a harris swivel bipod). Also, whats a good base/ring setup? I would probably mostly use it for coyotes and deer so 308 would be the caliber and would have to use a bullet constructed for hunting.. not paper. I also handload(but not for .308) So what set of dies would you people suggest.

LATTER all.

Well I just purchsed the 10LFP , mine is the left hand model. I have not shot it yet but I am impressed with the fit and finish so far. The price is right for sure, the barrel contour is fairly heavy. I have a buddy who has the same rifle but in rgt hand. He has shot his and is quite pleased. Rings and bases, I have a PRI base and Badger rings. The base is quite well made and I reccomend it. Try A.R.M.S rings,my buddy went with a set of throw levers on his Savage and it worked out well.

I have the 10FP LE2B (McMillan Stock with 26" barrel). It's topped with a 3.5-15x56 Nightforce. I'm using a +20 MOA Farrell base and Nightforce rings. I got the rings with the scope but if I was doing it again and the rings weren't included then I would get a matched set of rings and base from Ken Farrell. Mine flatly refused to shoot Federal Gold Medal Match. Not sure why, just didn't like it. I handload though so that really wasn't a problem. My load I use now is the 168gr AMax pushed by 42gr of Varget in a once fired Winchester case (FL Sized as it was picked up from the RCMP range) and a Federal 210 (not match) primer. Shoot into 3/8". The AMax is supposed to be well enough built for light game. I'm partial to Hornady dies because of the slidign collet for bullet seating.

Welcome to the Savage club JD. Now you can buty a Nightforce and be just like Farmboy and me!

Like BUM said mines topped with a Nightforce as well but I have a Near base and Leupy Mark4 rings.

I would recomend a different set of rings only based that there are Canadian made rings at a better price with better quality than the Mark4's.

For hunting you would not have any problems. It is a heavier rifle that other hunting style rifles however if your prepared for that....

I have taken mine moose hunting and loved it.

Farmboy and I agree on pretty much everything, save the manufacture of rings and bases. But I don't get into that anymore...everyone has heard my rant and it's to the point that even I'm sick of it :D

We're converting them eh bud? Slowly but surely!

Buh ha ha ha Soon they will all be followers of........

.....I mean it's good to see more shooters choosing Savage as their main rifle.

Yeah, I hear you on the ranting.

JD just the way you describe it is the way I have this one set up for my wife, except Hers is in .223. It is excellent on coyote, gopher etc. Like Big ugly I reload using Hornady bullets and dies for the .223 although I have picked up a new appreciation for Redding. The Savage is an Excellent rifle and the Legend scope is a good scope for this set up, especially in the price range. The .308 is going to give you just that much more versitility. Good Choice.:)

Here's a pic of me shooting the wifes savage and my Father in law shooting mine.

Savage 12fvss

I could use some advice on bases and rings guys. I'm about to buy a 12FVSS in 22.250 for varmints and I'm putting a Super Sniperm(30mm tube) on it. What bases and rings do you guys recommend and where do I buy them? If you know what height rings I need that would be a bonus.

Where can I buy the farrell base and rings in canada?

Big ugly man- Have you run that load over a crono? And is that 3/8" a 5shot group.. and off the bipod? I don't think i could justify buying a night force just yet lol...

Do these/your rifles need/have any bedding improvement?

Thanks for the replies guys!

My next bolt gun will be a Savage Le2B 308. After pricing out a A2 MCM Stock for my Mauser, The savage LE2B is a excellent deal and also I LOVE my Savage Steven 200 in 223.

I might get one of those kit that a CGN was selling to convert a Savage to use box mags. When I get the LE2B.

I believe Rick at ATR has Farrell bases. I actually ordered mine from Ken. Spoke to him on the phone and he set me up with what I needed. Very nice man.

I didn't shoot it over the chrony. Sohould be around 2500 FPS but I just haven't gotten around to chronographing it. FWIW it was my starting load and as I worked up in half grain increments, the group opened up. I was shooting on one of thise rare calm days in Saskatchewan...you know the ones I'm talkign about. I was more concerned with the groups at that point...I can chrony them on a breezy day. The group was a 3 shot group and off the Harris bipod with a rear bag. I don't have a pod-lock on my bipod but if you're going to do accuracy work off the bench using the bipod for a forward rest it would be a good idea.

And you can ALWAYS justify buying a Nightforce, especially withthe dolalr so strong. You'll probably save $200-300 over what I paid for mine in spring of 2004 while I was runnig back and forth between the Corlane booth and TSE booth at the Calgary gunshow. I gave $2K including the rings.

Do these/your rifles need/have any bedding improvement?

Nope. Haven't played with it at all. I don't think there's much to be gained when you're working with the McMillan stock.

It is so worth it!

Considering the MCM stock alone is 450 USD.... I think its well worth it.
If I had a chance to do up my Mauser or buy a Le2B I would picked the LE2B.
But I allready spent over 1200 on my Mauser.

+1

There's no comparison. Other people that bought the standard model immediately expressed regret. I remember one CGNer that was so disappointed with the tupperware that he had to shore it up with a metal rod through the stock. No such problems with the McMillan.
