Thoughts On .300 WSM

Just finished reading "Calibres Of The West" by Bill Luscombe, in BC Outdoors Hunting and Shooting July/August 2008 Magazine. In the document the Ballistics Tables were intresting as they showed the .300 WSM clearly out performed the .300 Win Mag. What suprised me most was the Bullet on Impact (foot pounds) info. Where at Muzzle the 300 Win mag was 3597fp and bled down too 3176fp in the first 100 yards (loss of 421fp). Where the .300 WSM at muzzle was 3261fp and at 100 yards 3195fp (loss of 66fp). At 400 yrds .300 win mag 2147fp and .300 WSM 2153fp. (Both where 180g Winchester Ammo). Other data in tables of Bullet Velocity and Trajectory were similar with WSM out performing the .300 Win Mag.
So my question is "Is this info correct", and why?

Thanks for any input.

If they had used the same bullet in both chamberings, the bullet that started out with more velocity would still have more velocity at 100 yards and at 400 yards, and at every distance between.Since energy is a direct result of velocity, the energy figures would follow the same pattern.Because they did not use the same bullet, the comparison is deceptive and of no real value.
The reality is that since the 300win mag has a larger case capacity,it can be loaded to produce more velocity and more energy than the 3w00wsm at all distances.

It's probably a comparison of some random (or hand picked) factory ammo.

Don't worry about it...The 2 cartridges are virtually identical in performance. When handloaded, the WM gets a bit more velocity, but not enough to worry about...

same trickery Remington used when they compared thier new 260 to the 270 Winchester...they used a bullet with an inferior ballistic coefficient for the 270 so the 260 with it's better BC could catch it at some point...if they use bullets with the same BC, the one that starts out fastest will always win the ballistic race.

I just went and checked the Winchester Website and the error is with them it would seem. When you compare the 180 gr Power Point between the 300 WSM and the 300 WIN MAG they have made an error on the 300 WIN MAG, probably entered the wrong ballistic coefficient. Kind of convenient they made the error in favor of their new flagship cartridge, though. Just luck I guess.

If you check the Federal website at http://www.federalpremium.com/products/rifle.aspx the 300 WSM and the 300 WIN MAG are identical. I use the Federal site a lot as they don't have any vested interest other than the 338 Federal to make them slant their figures.

The 300 Winchester Magnum will always be able to produce higher velocities - and energy - with any given bullet. The WM holds 10-12% more powder than the WSM and that will translate to 2-3% more velocity.

The way I see it is the Federal results are cooked too

I've fired/owned both- have a 300 WSM now. I like the short action of the 300 WSM. I load a 165 grn TSX at 3030 FPS. THere is nothing I can't hunt with that in BC, except maybe big coastal brown griz bears. I think the advantage with the 300 WM is that you can load a 200 grain bullet easier than with the 300 WSM. In 165 and 180, the WSM is matched with the WM.

I've been bitten by the SAUM bug since 2002..when I had my first one :) Amazing cartridges...no doubt a better design than the WSM

Ive yet to own a WSM  they're boring

I'll sell you a WSM...I have both the 7 and 300 SAUM and a 7WSM.....short mags are the best thing since sliced bread.....:)..well,'cept for computers maybe...:)

One argument I here against the WSM compared to the WM is that it doesn't handle the heavier bullets as well. I have found that not all true.

Loading 200 gr. Nosler Partitions using RL19 I can get comfortably get 2900 fps, which is very satisfactory and basically the same as published data for the regular win mag. With that heavy high BC bullet at moderate-high velocity, I dare say there is no critter in N.America that is going to get up after being hit proper.

The bullet is seated into the case body, but that doesn't seem to matter.
