Thoughts on a Marlin model 60?

I'm looking for a cheap semi-auto rimfire. Something under $250. Any thoughts on the Marlin 60? Is it better than the 597, savage 64, plinkster ect.?
 
The Marlin Model 60 has been around for quite a while and lots of them have been sold. As far as I know, they seem to have a good reputation. The last shot bolt hold open is a nice feature. The Marlin would be the one I would choose of the rifles you list.

If you prefer a box magazine, there is also the 795.
 
Seems to be a pretty good little rifle. I just finished rebuilding a Glenfield Model 60 (same thing as the Marlin) and it shoots well.

There are lots of simple mods you can do to get a better trigger pull as well. The trigger on this one had a pull of about 10 pounds and there was a hell of alot of pre-travel and creep.

Also take note of the feedthroat, they seem to be prone to wearing out and on the one that I fixed it was stovepiping.

I don't know if they are better or worse than the 10/22's or the 597's but definately comparible. Good luck and have fun with it!:D
 
You can run the hyper velocity stuff if you like but usaually you will sacrifice by losing accuracy. Don't know if it will lessin the life of the action but they are supposed to be harder on barrels.
 
I can't make up my mind between the Marlin 60 and the 10/22. I was leaning towards the 10/22 because I assumed that the magazines would be faster to load than the tube, but based on Polar Man's comments, that might not be accurate. Can you clear that up for me Polar Man?
 
My first gun was a Glenfield 60 (Marlin's cheaper twin!). Bought it for $40 from Otasko south of the border. What I remember is how incredibly accurate it was right out of the box with iron sights.

At first, I assumed that the model 60 had a loading port underneath the receiver, only to find out that you need to load from the OTHER END of the tube.
 
Well I bought the standard model 60 today and brought it out to the parents farm. It dosen't take very long to load at all and the tube mag looks a lot nicer on the rifle than the clip mag. I didn't get to shoot many rounds because it started to snow like crazy and the horses haven't heard a gunshot since last hunting season and started to gallop around everywhere. The windage on the iron sight is off by a pretty fair amount but that will be easy to fix. Other than that I am really impressed by this rifle. I don't think you can do any better for $220.

Wholesale sports has them. I took it to the range today for a real first shoot. Put 450 through her in about 3 hours. As I said the windage on the irons was off a bit but it didn't take long before I had it dead on. Out of 450 rounds the only thing that went wrong was that after firing a subsonic round (I shot one box of 50) the cocking lever went to half #### as if the mag was empty but there were still rounds in it. It only happened once and I think it was because of the subsonic round. No failure to feed/fire/eject all day. Its pretty darn accurate as well, it can shot better than I can. Only bad thing was I forgot suncreen and now have a burn :(. As for accuracy I was able to hit shot shells off a bench pretty consistanly at 30 yards, which is good for me since I'm a noob.
