Thoughts on lower end trap gun

Google and see what you come up with, plenty to read about online, most comments are for the negative but that being said people with slam them without ever having touched one ??? Find a used Browning BT-99, very reasonable for singles trap and they have a good resale value, which the TriStars wont have
 
Ive never heard of them, but Ive seen some Turkish doubles that seemed reasonable. Just find something you think you like and google some reviews.
 
If shooting trap is your game, and money is a factor, then go for the BT-99 and shoot singles. About as inexpensive as it gets without getting a piece of crap. If you want to shoot doubles though...

A pump gun.

If you're buying cheap, then I'm guessing it's recreation you're after. And for that, it's impossible to argue against a pump.

Remington 870, Winchester SXP, Browning BPS for modern. Winchester 12, older 870 Wingmaster, or Ithaca 37 for classic fixed choke guns (very cheap, since demand is low)

Semi autos - Remington 11-87, Auto-5.

All of those guns are solid. Models with choke tubes or swappable barrels will serve for trap, skeet, 5 stand.

^^^ The Turkish make very good inexpensive firearms ..my Winchester SXP is pretty nice for the money
 
I agree with the others here - lots of reviews / discussion on the bigger trapshooting sites - mostly bad, some good and resale value would not be very good in my opinion.

I'd go with a quality used gun - there are some good deals to be had. There's a shop in NB that have quite a few used trap guns - there's a BT 99 and a few Beretta A400 target shotguns. PM me for shop details - don't think they're a sponsor here. Nothing wrong with the Beretta semi autos - good, reliable and will keep the resale value. The A400 Sporting Clay guns would also be fine for trap.

A few guys at our club have the Bettinsoli over unders. No major issues but I think I'd go with a Bettinsoli over a Tri Star.

I agree with broadway, for the money you spend on the Tri Star you could buy a much higher quality used trap gun, such as a Browning Citori or a Beretta. The Franchi is also a very good choice, that won't break the bank and these guns have almost doubled in price the past five years or so as they gain popularity with the trap & skeet guys.
 
I have purchased a couple of really nice O/U Trap guns for under $1000. Both were fixed choke guns which is reflected in the asking price. One was an as new Franchi Master Trap with lovely figured wood and the other a Browning Citori Trap. Still have the Franchi and am very happy with the way it shoots.!!
 
A friend has the Tristar combo which I've tried a few times. He doesn't shoot it often - has other better guns. It's okay for trap but it is heavy - 8.5+ lbs and being a high rib it takes getting used to. The weight and high rib, though adjustable, doesn't make it really suitable for skeet or sporting if you ever want to try those games. Also the length of the adjustable comb makes it difficult to shorten the stock if needed. I believe it's made by Khan in Turkey - looks like the K500 Sport models. It also looks almost identical to the Canuck trap combo which sells for a lot less and has an adjustable stock - Bulls Eye London has that one for $1500. Can't comment on durability but the fit and finish were okay but obviously not B gun quality. There is a bias against Turkish made guns but not all are bad, I have several that I like to shoot along with my 686 SP1 that I've had zero problems with even after 100's of rounds - the Weatherby SA-08 for one.
 
Remington 1100 for your daughter, very little recoil and used prices are very reasonable, plus they are readily available all over the place!
 
That high rib would take a lot of getting the used to for me. I, d have to try one to see if I liked it before I would commit to buying one. Most likely I would stick with a higher end used gun.

Back in the day when my sister was starting out my dad set her up with a Remington 1100 and cycled 1oz trap loads just fine with very little to low recoil. I started out on a Browning Citori (combo) when I was 12 years old. By the time I stopped shooting trap my dad sold the combo and got his money back but regretted selling it as it would’ve been a nice set up to keep for occasional use.

Considering that the TT combo sells for ~$2400+, there are many good o/u in that range - e.g. the Browning Citori CX or Cynergy CX , for a few $100 more the Beretta 686 SP1 - all much better choices
