Thoughts on rebarrelling or reboring a ruger scout to .338federal?

so I've been trying to get a nice short handy rifle in .338 federal
I compromised when I picked up a ruger scout in .308 recently and as such I've got it up for sale/trade in an effort to maybe get a tikka t3 already in .338federal
I don't need to be talked out of the caliber choice so let's get that on the table.
and I know I can just order a rem type action and build something from scratch.
I like the ruger scout and how it carries, I also like it is already set up with a great detacheable mag system and excellent polymer mags.
the irons with the addition of the xs sight rail and rear peep are fantastic.

but I want it in .338 federal, 1/10 twist , factory scout length, with the same mounting holes and front sight mounting detail.
some friends in the states suggested I look for someone to rebore it vs getting a whole new barrel made up......
who's our top ruger rebarrelling or barrel reboring guy up here ?
I am open to suggestions/advice
 
The way the folds in the mag. support the shoulder area affect trying to load .338 rounds properly. It doesn't lend itself to an straight over conversion. Been there, done that.
 
Find a reliable source for brass and/or a case forming die first. Midway, Stateside, shows every brand as being out of stock and only 2 being ok to back order.
Talk to Mystic about a barrel. He has a Krieger 1 in 10 .338 blank in stock.

I've got over 800 .338 fed factory unfired brass, I'm good ;)

as for the conversion not working due to the mag?? can't see how that would be a problem , can you elaborate?
.338 fed rounds fit and strip from the polymer mags just fine...... I'm thinkin I just need a bigger tube to fit the bullet thru ;)
 
I like your plan, I think that would make an EXCELLENT rifle. If it were me I would probably talk to Ted Gaillard or Rob Jury and see what the cost to re-chamber and re-bore is. My bet is you can buy a pre-threaded and chambered Douglas, Pacnor, McGowen or Shilen and have the sights re-installed on it for a lot less money than re-boring and chambering the existing barrel.
 
I never tried the polymer mags., you may be fine with them. With the double stack Alpha mags the follower had to be modified because of the step up which cocked the rounds and would not sit flat. I was going to rebore the barrel so the finish would match. Hard to duplicate the Ruger etching process.
 
Try Ron Smith for the barrel re-bore. He did the same for me re-chambering and re-boring from 308 to 338 Federal on a Brno ZKK barrel with no problems. The cost was somewhat less than for a new barrel considering the new barrel has to be threaded and mounted. A re-bored barrel is a new, never been fired from barrel and if you like what you have on the outside I say go that route.
