Hi, I'm a new shooter, Im looking for a 308 for fun at range 100-300m and that it's shootable if I decide hunting too if I decide to.

I have 3 choice
- Used Savage 10TR 24" with Vortex Crossfire II 6-24x50 and bipod but no muzzle brake. 1000$ (local)
- New Savage 10TR 20" that i could setup the way I want (like 20 inch better for weight and rigidity) (online dealer, like good deal on SFRC)
- Used Remington 700 VTR 22" mid-heavy barrel with Bushnell elite 3200 3-9x40, Leupold mount, bipod, integrated muzzle brake, approx. 250$ of hunting/shooting ammo. $900 (on CGN exchanges)

The VTR seems to be a great deal and a happy middle for my skill and use. I could sell the scope and buy something with more magnification. The online reviews are mixed about accuracy and consistency of the VTR, so I'm seeking advices from real users.

Also what would you choose if you were me? I know the Savage is kind of heavy, but bearable. (I'm 23)

Stay away from the big crossfire scope, and a brake is not necessary with a not magnum caliber. Either of the others will serve you fine. Buy a quality scope and have fun. If you plan to hunt with it, be sure not to buy too big a scope as the low power is important, ie. 5-15 power is a little high powered on the low end for any normal hunting range in eastern Canada. You will want to be able to get down to 2 or 3 times magnification if you are hunting at closer ranges.
Be safe and have fun!

PS. That Rem is a good deal considering the ammo and scope, although I have no experience with the VTR specifically. Much better scope than the Vortex. If you are a new shooter keep the 3-9 and get proficient at 100m before you spend bucks on a bigger scope to stretch it out.

I bought a Remington M700 SPS in 308. Quite frankly IMHO it's a piece of crap. I used M700's in the 70's and 80's and they were good accurate rifles with heavy barrels. The modern M700 SPS comes with a throw away stock and I do mean throw it away, as far as you can pitch it. The trigger is not awful. The accuracy out of the box is middling at best. I replaced the stock with a B&C and have worked up some MOA loads but I expected better. If I were to do it over again I would pick up one of the Savage 10TR's or a Tikka.

The VTR deal is gone. I guess 10TR is a good choice from what i've read, but a bit heavy. I will wait for a deal for those or something similar. At thanksgiving the 20" 10TR was $635 to the door. Also what's wrong with the crossfire 2? I've heard that 4.5-18x40 AR Optics from Bushnell for $250 at Sail were excellent for up to 400m but it's not a long range scope by any mean.

Its at the bottom end of their lineup so you get bottom end quality. IMO you usually get what you pay for in optics. Clarity and light gathering usually mean higher end, or at least somewhere in the middle.

I owned a vtr in 223 and once i found the right bullet weight it was a fun accurate rifle to shoot, I also owned a 10tr and as far as savage accuracy goes i was not impressed with mine out of the box, i tried to find a good load but it never did group as good as I was hoping for?!

I've seen the Ruger Predator in 308 on Cabela's, with a little heavier countered barrel. Review looks good, the gun too. Seems that no one carries it in Canada and Cabela's is backorderable.

I own a VTR in .308 it gives consistent 3/4 and 1/2 moa depending on what you feed it, scoped with a bushnell legend ultra 4.5-14x44mm in a DNZ rail mount, cooper bipod and a hogue stock. Works beautifully.
