I just got a line on a Remington 710 with 3x9 scope for $300 in 30-06. I'm just looking to see what the general opinion on these rifles is. I'm anticipating the standard "RUUUUUUN" that seems to come with lower end remington rifles but I am looking for an honest opinion from people that have owned these.

Cheers,

I had one. In 30.06. It pretty much shot where you pointed it, however I found the bolt rather hard to manipulate, meaning that it was loose and had a tendency to jam if you got it too far out of alignment. It wasn't a big problem at the range, but a fast follow up shot on a deer could be a problem. I hated the "J" lock, but they existed on every Remington at the time. I traded mine in on a Ruger KM77 and never looked back. There are far, far better used rifles out there for the same or slightly more money.

A few years ago I was at a friends house and a guy showed up looking for a new hunting rifle. He told us his Remington 710 gun blew up and he needed something else.
He took his new 270 to the range, on the way he saw a loose round rolling around on the floor of the truck so he thought it was one of his. He picked it up and put it in with the rest of his ammo, he fired a few rounds and when he got to that one the gun blew up. He had picked up a 308 and fired it through the 270, as a result it welding the bolt head to the barrel. The bolt locks into the barrel like a Sportco and some shotguns, not up against the barrel like a Mauser action. I think the average gun would have been much more drastic. I don't like the 710 but have a new respect for the action.

I had one for a while. I actually was pretty damn accurate but it was a POS. The bolt is crap, and the barrel is pressed in. The bolt had a habit of falling out if you cycled it too fast.

I would save up a few hundred more and get a decent rifle if I were you.

Last hunting season a man left his 710 in the truck while he went into the Whitehorse Walmart to buy bullets. When he returned to his truck it had been broken in to. There on the seat was another 710.

Tongue in cheek . . . I don't even know if there is a Walmart in WH.
