thoughts on ruger 77/44

My father in law has an old semi auto ruger in 44. Not the same action but the same result. It's a good laugh but not all that accurate. 2" groups @ 100yds.
He loves it for being so light and was even naive enough to pack it out for his cow elk draw that he waited for four years to get. Need I say the elk were there on his last day to hunt but they were out of range for his cabbage tosser. He never got another chance. I told him to pack his 06........... :roll:

That's what Kurt uses it for now. He and the Missus love to hike up to fire towers and such through the summer months and totted it for defense, the perfect 'lil lotta.
We loaded up 300 gr xtp's and 265gr hornady's for it, settled with the 265's as they held up better.
I would try to find one you could try out before buying as I don't know what kind of resale market there is for one should you not be happy with it.
If your up this way sometime I could go grab Kurt's gun and let you yard off a few rounds. 8)

Can't load heavy 300 grainers in mine. The rotary mag is too short. 3" @ 100 with most loads. More than accurate for 150 yard range. I find my Win 94 much more accurate and will feed ANYTHING. The 77 is my wifes rifle and she loves it. Easier for her to use than my clumsy tube mag(to her). I also like the fact you can slip a whole mag into the rifle if you see an animal from the vehical.

I don't have a 77, but I do have the lever 96-44. I find 2-3 inch groups as close to perfection as a guy can shoot. I've read a few american forums where guys have improved accuracy by replacing the factory barrel. I am actually looking for a custom barrel maker to turn out such a product. I mounted a Tasco shotgun scope on it this fall for mulie season. I used in the opening week when the deer were still 'curious' and not too spooked. My mule buck was 100 +/- 5 yds, and with jacketed 180 grn., the bullet entered the lungs/heart and bounced around, not even exiting the other side! The small buck walked about 5 yds and collapsed. The analogy of a fat .22 is about right. It's a great light gun for packing. I look forward to using it next summer knocking a few pesky beavers off their dams.
