Thoughts on ruger American carbine ?

When I ordered, I was able to put the NC2 in the cart and check out, however later on I had recieved email from S & J that it is out of stock.
So they switched me to the other one (the older model in your second link)...from what I understand, the differences are only cosmetic in nature, as the other one does not have the horizontal grooves.

Yeah, these days they are pretty pricey, but so is a loaf of bread or a tank of gas. When I bought mine they were about $600which seemed fair.

Still. I can't complain much. I have two .223 Ruger Americans with about 10K rounds through them each. They haven't broken. They are still accurate. $800 USED TO BUY YOU A Ruger Hawkeye/MK77 which are much better rifles. But you used to get a new SKS for $75 and now a refurbished one is $450

Same as a new Tikka T3X isn't worth 1200$ to me and used to cost 800$ a few years back. Like Gatehouse says inflation affects almost all products and you've got to put it in perspective.
There still exist on the EE a few brands and models of sporting rifle which for some reason fetch lower prices but are great value for the dollar.
 
They shoot fantastic, no doubt. I'm a fan of the Predator model, I just prefer that extra bit of barrel over the Standard. The Ranch is neat, too. But they are definitely made to hit a price point. The stocks are junk, any trigger with a blade safety is a compromise, the fit and finish is on par with a Savage Axis (poor), mags are trash (edit: they work fine but I do not like the "feel" of them locking into the stock), but they very likely won't blow up in your face and also quite likely will be decently accurate (at least the Standard and Predator models seem to be).

However I wouldn't pay $800 for a Ruger American anything, but so long as you right-size your expectations it should be fine. In that general price range, the Weatherby Vanguard is unbeatable. Howa 1500 is also nice, and of the newer rifle designs I would take the Winchester XPR or Browning AB3 over anything from the Savage Axis or Ruger American lineups nowadays.

Love my little Ranch in 556. Accurate and handy. I also have a predator in 243.

The factory stock fits me better than pretty much every off the shelf rifle i have tried. That said, it is definitely too flexible for anything that recoils much harder than a 6.5 CM.

Still of the most accurate rifles I own. Consistently shooting .5MOA all day long if i do my part. I must have lucked out, as my trigger is quite good, but even then, a $10 spring and some polish will fix any issues.

The only thing im not a fan of is the safety that does not lock the bolt. It's a little to easy for it to come out of battery when stalking/hunting.

Highly recommend.

There's a like new M77 Tang Safety in 30-06 on EE for that price. Great rifles! Or, buy a new old stock CZ557 in that price range, and they too are way better.
