I just picked one up. What do people think of this rifle? I have had it out to the range and already formed my initial opinion, just wondering what others think... Also looking for any information about the gun.

Thanks
John

I did a couple deer rifle builds with 340's in .30/30 for the kids... loaded 150 BT's and then did well on deer when they were young... sold them off awhile back.

I have a 219 in 30-30 .. it has a 410 barrel with it and a 20 gauge barrel . and of course they are stamped model 220 but they interchange with the 219 .. I have shot a few deer with it .. with the gun having a 26 inch barrel I think it more than accurate enough since it just has the open sights ..

I have one in 30-30 and a 220 barrel in 12 ga. Neat old guns. I have only ever fired the 30-30 a few times. Racy look to them.

I've heard that the recoil of a shotgun bbl can cause stocks on the rear stock in the Tang area. Seems as though the older wood combined with a slim wrist can crack easier than one would think.

Yup, I found shotgun "jump" to be a bit excessive, kind of like a poorly designed stock. No cracks but I won't be firing the shotgun barrel anymore anytime soon, But, I have great results using 150gr flat base "pointy" bullets in the rifle barrel. Great gun for carry. Slimmest gun you could ever want for a walk over "hill n dale".

I've got one in 30/30 , its a very handy and reasonably accurate ( 1.5 to 2 inch , 3 shots , 100 yards , 4 X scope ) little rifle . It's a bit tricky to shoot off the bench . It doesn't like having the fore-end touching the rest , but shoots great if I rest my wrist on the bags and hold the rifle so it doesn't touch . It isn't picky about what I feed it , any bad groups I've got are down to me and how I hold it . It shoots very consistently off hand , but does tend to shoot about two inches higher , which isn't to hard to work around . It's not a fancy rifle but it's become one of my favourites over the years , it's my poor mans Kipplauf lol . Don't be surprised if yours starts to grow on you too .

I've got a 5 barrel set right now, 30-30, 25-20, 410, 28 and 16 ga barrels and they're all fun to shoot.

Still looking for a 22 Hornet barrel, had to give mine up for the 25-20 barrel.

So not really a bad thing to say about the gun (at least in its 30-30 rifle configuration. Well I only have had it out to the range once so far, but at this point Im loving it! Rifle is very light and comfortable to shoulder and shoot off hand. A lot less recoil than I expected... and some pretty good groupings. Managed to pull off a 1" group with 5 shots at 50 yards. I figure with a scope I might be able push that level of accuracy out too 100yards... but Im reluctant to drill and tap the barrel for a scope. Even a peep would be better... I dont really like notch type sights. Will shoot some more groupings to get a better feel for the rifle.

That's good shooting , mine was drilled and tapped when I got it so I didn't have your dilemma . They grow on you , don't they lol .

I think most of the 219's that had Chicopee addresses and serial numbers were grooved for scopes at the factory, these were made after 1948.

Any Utica made 219's that have scope mounts were all done after they left the factory.

I've got a Lyman peep sight made for a 219 here and I'm not sure what to do with it, it would be a great added feature but I'm not sure I want to have my receiver tapped for it.

Just to correct. Mine does have grooves for a scope. They are shallow and narrow and figured I would require a more "modern" and secure mount? Maybe Im wrong? as Im no expert on scope mounts. Anyone know what size/type mounts I would need?

Also and recommendations on a compact fixed magnification scope? Im thinking the generic 3X9 hunting scopes might not be the right fit or "feel" for this rifle.

BTW The 1" groups was my best of the day and obviously a little lucky ;-) I had a few other groups in the 3-4" range... point is a feel the rifle is accurate enough to consider a scope, which I know would increase my accuracy at longer distances.

Serious consideration is being given too hanging up my .303 Lee-enfield as my go to deer rifle and switching to this Savage 219.

I have heard of a few guns being rechambered to 30-40 Krag. Anyone here seen that?

We were talking about rechambering a Baikal 7.62X39 single shot to 303 British, when one very well-known gunsmith told me that he did a couple of 219s to 30-40 for guys who wanted a bit more oooomph. :dancingbanana:
