The new Savage MkII BV arrived last week. Initial thoughts - looked good, felt like a 'real' rifle', fit and finish was good ( one small mark on stock - no biggie - that may have missed the QC person at the factory ) and action seemed smooth. I mounted a spare orphan scope - which in this case was a Falcon Menace 4.5x18x56 which is too much scope for this rifle but was what I had available - on the factory installed Weaver-type bases using a spare set of no-name 30mm rings I had to hand. A quick boresight and I was good to go.
I took the new rifle out last weekend to Mission with a variety of ammo ( Federal 525 family pack , American Eagle 40 g, Eley Target, CCi Mini Mag and Remington Viper ) and its fair to say that this was the first time that I'd been really impressed by a rimfire. Previously I had considered this type of rifle to be just a plinker and hadn't really appreciated what a precise tool a rimfire rifle could be. I used the Shooting Federation of Canada .22 20 yard targets and at 25 meters it was too easy. At 50m I was able to place 10 shots into the #10 ring using all ammo. Moving to 100 m the American Eagle was the most accurate followed by the Federal 36 g which was surprising - maybe the rifle likes cheap ammo ? - as I assumed the more expensive stuff would perform better at that distance. I shot for about two hours and the rifle perfomed perfectly, no FTF and accuracy remained constant. I did have a bit of an issue with the factory magazine which didn't seem to hold the shells in place ( maybe the spring tension, maybe the lips - don't know yet ) on every reload but was ok the majority of the time.
All in all a very satisfying purchase. A rifle that I will probably start of most range sessions with and one that in and of itself is a pleasure to shoot.
