thoughts on the 110FP

I'm thinking of getting a savage boltgun and wonder if anybody has the 110FP model and how they like it. I would prefer 7mm but it only comes in .300WM which is good for long range shooting although it has more recoil. Years ago I had a savage in .308 and it was a tack driver. Any thoughts on this rifle?
 
Hey Lamar. Great choice of guns. I have the 10 FP (short action) and she's a tack driver. The new accutrigger is amazing. Very crisp and NO creep whatsoever. Savages are very underrated IMHO. More bang for the buck and one of the most accurate brands out-of-the-box. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR PURCHASE>

If you want a 10, spend the extra money, and get the choate/macmillan/hs stock. The Savage stock works, and shoots extremely well, and is pillar bedded, but is FUGLY. Looks like it was about 40c, has sharp mould lines everywhere, and I find the checkering very out of place on a plastic stock.
 
I also have a 10FP, I am having the stock replaced with a McMillan A1, but until it arrives 6 months from now, I bought a Duramaxx stock. On the fugly issue, and this is only my opinion, the Choate Sniper is much more fugly then the factoy, the Varmint is pretty cool, but would be better with the stippling like on the the Sniper and get rid of that accessoiry rail so one does nto need to buy the adaptor for a bi-pod, those thigns are enough $$$ as it is ! Anyway you get it, it is a fantastic rifle out of the box and is very accurate. You will not regret it, no matter which model and stock you get.

I've got the 10FLP in .308. It shoots 1" groups at 100yds using UMC 150gr FMJ.

The stock isn't great but it does work, just check the action screws to make sure they don't work loose.

This is good to hear, I know Savage makes a great rifle for a reasonable price but I haven't shot one in a long time and am looking forward to trying out the new accu trigger. I talked to a guy a while back who said the accu trigger sucks but he's a big remington fan so I took his opinion with a grain of salt.
 
As far as the accutrigger, try it yourself and see. FWIW, I can't see how anyone can dislike this trigger, it's far cleaner than even a lot of aftermarket triggers I've tried. I even prefer it to the remington target 40x trigger on my XR-100.

Funny how people's preconceived notions color their perceptions sometimes
 
Steve, what do you mean that the Choate stock is ugly? :rolleyes: It's what makes it stand out. Here's a pic of my Savage and a Mav 88 with another Choate stock (m5). Can you tell I like Choate stocks? :D :D

Please take no offense, I did not mean anything personal by it, I just cannot stand the look of them, and after a visit to Epps last week to look at them, as I wanted to by one for my 10FP until my McMillan arrvies in 6 months, I do not like them, just not for me, but then again, I do not like the A2 stock if you can believe that, I had a 10FP McMillan and sold it to weeks after I bought it. I really like like regular style stocks and very much favour the McMillan A1.

could you do a mini review of the Choate stock vs the Savage stock ? I'm very interested in the " Ultimate Varmit" stock.

On the McMillan model, it is verymuch worth it. If you buy a 10FP and then want to restock it later with a McMillan, the stock would run you in the $700-$750 range, the whole rifle with the stock already on it is $1100, it is well worth the money.

I really have nothing to compare it to as I did what Steve mentioned. I purchased the gun with the Ultimate sniper stock already attached. Another great stock for these guns are available from another member on the board. Ian Robertson (Robertson Composites) w w w.robertsoncomposites.com is an Ottawa based stock maker/designer who's well known in the Target/Tactical community. It's just another option for these tack drivers. I just happen to be partial to the Choates.
