Well I am doing dome research on my next caliber wich I would like for coyote and deer and I thought the .243 might be up to the task. My question is on what would be the best rate of twist for all bullet weights in this caliber or am I just dreaming?

Sorry about the spelling, I am doing this in my black berry

I'd look for 1:9 twist. Especially if you want to shoot the heavier Barnes TSX. Then again I've never used them in a .243 so take it with a grain of salt.

There will be more educated people to give you an answer on twist rate but fi you need a rifle for both coyote and deer you chose the perfect caliber.

A 243 would be an excellent choice for deer and coyote. I don't see how you could do better.
Bigger is not necsessarily better. Thus, there is no point in saying a 25-06 is any "better." Dead is dead, and I can asuure you, a 243 makes a large enough exit hole in a coyote.
The same hits on a deer, whether it is a 243 or a 25-06 will have the same results. Just use the proper bullets, in each.

My kids all shot their first few deer with a 243, 5 total all bang flops, don't recall the weight of bullet was 95 gr ballistic tip I think, not a varmint bullet but a BT designed for game, always a good exit hole even with the BT and lots of internal damage that never failed to drop them in their tracks, an underrated deer cartridge... Although I have a pre 64 in 243 that I have never used.

Just don't use a varmint bullet on deer.

Maybe a 243 is ok for those itty bitty BC deer..

although I would not suggest doing so, a 55gr NBT @ 3800 fps broaside in the ribs *will* kill a deer, even a small BC deer :) heck it even exited

I'm taking my new to me H&R handy rifle in .243 out this year for deer this season after reloading some Barnes TSX for it.

I liked the result at the range with factory win 100 grainers... that is once I got used to the heavy trigger on this rifle. :D

Ok. I should have thought out my first post better. I KNOW a .243 will kill a deer very well with proper shot placement and bullet design bla bla bla lol. I use to hunt with a guy who used one and he shot at least 5 or 6 with never lost one and the furthest tracking job was around 10 yards. I think he used 90 gr power points. So to get back to my real question, what is the ideal twist rate for the broadest range of bullet weights?
