Thoughts on the 270wby

Love this cartridge!!! I was originally looking at getting a .257 but decided upon the .270Wby mag and never regretted it.

Extremely flat shooting and more versetile than the .257Wby I was getting 3360fps with 140gr Nosler Accubonds and 3430fps with 130gr Barnes TSX's.

Absolutely flattens deer and bang-flopped a 5x5 bull elk at 410yds.

Was my go-to gun until I fell in love with my .240Wby!
 
Its the 270 on speed. Great round. Throws a heavier bullet then the 257 and bullet selection is better if u reload. Now come the barrel burning comments.
 
My Mauser sporter has fired 700+ rounds, gets over 3500 fps with 130 Partitions, 3200 with 150 Swift A-Frames, and kills stuff like lightning....... out of its old twenty-four inch Douglas barrel.

Fired cases still have tight primer pockets after five firings.

Sighted in 3" high at 100, it is less than 7" low at 411 yd (385 meters), the distance to the pig rail at our silhouette range. That, Friends, is flat!

My first hunting rifle was a old Husquavarna rechambered to 270 Weatherby my grandfather gave me the rifle.

I didn't reload back then but my grandfather did so he gave me an assortment of his reloads and about 10 boxes of 130gr factory ammo.

In turn I gave this rifle to my 27 year old son I load 140gr TSX @ 3200fps for him 3 shot groups average 3/4" @ 100 yards = he's good to go for almost anything he will ever hunt.
 
It does indeed! :D Thanks for the heads-up, brybenn. My two finger hunt and peck typing skills at work again.

Hodgdon website shows IMR7828 giving those velocities at 53,000 CUP. Not bad at all, but can you imagine the muzzle blast!

I used H450 and Norma 205 for years. Since they are gone, Re22 does the trick quite nicely with very fine accuracy.

I would recommend the 257 wby with 100gr ttsx at 3600+ fps. Super flat and low recoil. I would skip the 270 wby in favor of the 7mm wby mag. 7mm has exceptional bullet selection and some very high bc bullets which really shine in a fast 7mm.
 
To be fair, kman didn't actually say anything about the selection of .277" bullets. He just pointed out that there are lots of 7mm bullets.

I'm actually giving the 270 Wby consideration for when I rebarrel my Pre 64 M70. It's already a 257 Wby but I already have a 25-06 so I need something between .257" and .308" in my safe. I'm hoping to liberate the Old Man's 7mm Wby from him one of these years so there's obviously room for a .277" something in the safe! :D Of course, I'm faced with a hellacious gap between .306 and .366 on the other side so that will need plugging as well.
 
Agreed, and that's why I posted with respect to his post. My point is there are lots of 270 bullets, as well.

You won't be sorry if you barrel up a 270 Wby. I was nothing short of amazed when I started working with mine. Nothing wrong with the 7mm Wby either.

270 Weatherby is the ultimate. Have had a pile of them, and just added a lasermark to the collection. Haven't found a critter that needs a second poke with it yet. IMR 7828 is the go to powder for it. Velocity is 200 fps faster with it over reloader 22. 140 grain Hornadys are clocking 3400 fps and the 130's are just over 3500. The 150's are 3300.

Interesting I have never tried IMR7828 in my old 270 W and as luck will have it I still have 1/2 lbs of it that I do not use.

Will definately give it a try in the future don't know why I need to go faser than 3200fps with 140gr TSX though that load will do anything that needs to be done.
