I am on the cusp of getting a beretta 92a1...deep down I want a 96a1...for the .40 factor. I have two .40 handguns and to keep them all the same calibre would be e. but I have heard there were some issues with the buffers and frames on the 96?? Any one have any ideas/suggestions??

It's currently quite difficult to get a decent holster for the A1 Berettas, and may remain that way, since, for some unfathomable reason, they decided to give the 92A1 (and I assume the 96A1) a different trigger guard profile than the M9A1 - which you can get a decent holster for from multiple makers. Given that US customers are more likely to want an M9A1, US holster makers may not get enough demand to make holsters for the civvy version.

Desantis makes a few holsters for the 92A1.

Anyways the new 96A1, and 92A1 for that matter are upgraded versions of the 92 and 96 which specifically delt with the weaknesses in the old designs.

If your gonna get the 96, the A1 is the way to go.

Upgrades:

- Built in recoil buffer to address locking block(cracking) issues
- Takedown button is different, and lever locks automatically when slide is racked on reassembly
- front sight is removable/upgradeable where old models were machined into slide
- mags hold 1 or 2 more rounds in the 92a1 at least, but not applicable here anyway

My opinion on the new A1's is that they are the single best deal in a pistol out there. fit and finish is fantastic, and this gun is at the peak of the evolution of a classic pistol.

My 92A1 is the most accurate 9mm I have had the pleasure to shoot, with it's only competition being the CZ 75 Sp01, but the design, fit and finish give the Beretta the win IMHO.

Absolutely love my 96a1. Very accurate finish was great and in the process of finding some night sights for it. I wear a drop leg holster so it fits nice in that

I couldn't agree more.

I have a 96 A1 and I love it. Flawless operation (true, I haven't put too many rounds through it, maybe 400), easy field strip and maintenance, perfect fit (at least for my big hands), accuracy, well balanced, nice and consistent trigger

I still can't believe how they come in so inexpensive compared to H&Ks or SIGs (which I admire as well, both). They display similar quality and engineering refinement, but 92/96 A1s are almost half price.

it is actually more difficult to get a 92A1 since more and more people believe the frame of 96A1 is actualy designed for 9mm (????? not quite sure about that)

The 92 was designed for a 9mm, same as Glock 17 and Sig 226. .40 came out after those designs (and many others) were produced for many years.

They made changes to all those guns to adapt them for .40. I prefer 9mm so I'd go with a 92 personally.

Edit: IIRC 96A1 came out before 92A1.

Stick with 9mm in Berettas. Given the poor durability of the previous Model 96s, I am somewhat skeptical of Beretta's claims regarding the 96A1.

Besides that, unless you need to shoot through windshields or defend against large animals, the 40 S&W doesn't really do much that the 9mm can't do. Lower ammunition cost and lighter recoil will make it easier for you to attain a higher level of proficiency with 9mm compared to .40.

The early beretta 96s had some durability problems but very few though and that it was usually the result of the frame cracking , they then fixed it by changing over from a straight dust cover to a slanted one and now the new 96A1s come with a beefed up slide and frame and rail so i wouldnt worry about durability problems of any sort.

Well I went with the 92a1...I actually ordered the wrong gun...meant to be the 96...but when I checked again it was the 92...guess that's fates way of saying the 92 was meant to be in my safe...

Thanks for all the advice...

Anyone got a suggestion on where to get a holster??
