Modern sporting rifles aren't normally stocked for shooting with irons, the comb is almost always too high. My ZG-47 by contrast is perfect for the chore, and my cheek weld is consistent and repeatable. The NECG peep made for the CZ 550 attached to it with no modifications required to either rifle or sight and I had a rectangular post made for the factory barrel band front sight. This is the rifle I shoot most often, and the one which I find the easiest to shoot with irons. It is also the only iron sighted rifle I have managed torepeatedly shoot 300 yard, MOA, 5 shot groups with, although I still can't do that on demand.
My Winchester M-94 wears a Williams Foolproof rear and an XS post front sight that I intentionally ordered high, then trimmed to regulate to my cast bullet loads. I like the lever gun, a rather beat up NWT Commemorative, with a long untapered octagon barrel, but the cheek weld and stock fit doesn't begin to compare to the old Brno.
The original stock on my Brno 602 was well suited to shooting with irons, and I have a Talley ghost ring as back up to the scope. But when the factory stock failed I switched to a McMillan which again follows the high comb design of the modern sporter rather than the Euro style comb of it's predecessor, or the British Express Rifle style comb that was better than either. As a result when the scout scope is removed, and a shot is made with the ghost ring, the recoil painfully snaps my head back and feels like it loosens my teeth . . . great fun. Still, I won't change the height of the comb because the cheek weld it provides with the 2X Leupold EER is as close to perfect as I could hope for.
I had my Grandson's CZ 452 Scout worked over in the spring, and the improvements include a scalloped Ruger barrel band front sight with a rectangular post insert and a Williams Foolproof rear sight, marketed specifically for this rifle. Despite a significant investment for what was intended to be a very basic, decent quality, rimfire, the improvements have addressed any shortcomings it might have had, and has resulted in the creation of a very shootable training rifle of excellent value, the correct size for a young enthusiastic marksman.
