I spotted a cheap SR556 today and not having had a piston AR decided to give it a shot - anyone have any experience with one, and if so, what are your thoughts. Also, please, I'm not new to this, I bought it FOR the piston, I know that it doesn't have a practical advantage over a DI gun - but I've had multiples of those and no piston guns.

I have the 556E. Love it. My first AR, no problems so far, not many rounds through it because it's winter but spring is coming! Jon.

There are articles out there comparing the relative merits of direct impingement, long and short stroke piston AR 15's.

Choices, choices .....

Ok, Picked up a Ruger SR556E from Flahertys a couple of weeks back. I had a Colt LE 6920 a few years back & i have to say, so far, it feels smoother & has less recoil (not much in any .223 AR IMO) However, it comes in 2/3 of a lb heavier from the metal hand guard. I'm very happy with it & i reload so, lookn forward to load developing for it.I love the flip up sights & there is a lot of room for a small (4-7 X?) scope if i decide to bench it. I was correct in thinking anything Ruger will be decent & I'm very pleased so far. My first test firing was a bit of a downer due to me leaving front sight adj tool on my bench at home:mad:. Groupings were decent even with my aging eye sight! Another reason i picked this Sr556E over my second choice ( Sig 400 Enhanced, same price at Flarhertys too!) was barrel twist & that darn A2 front sight. Ruger has flip up sights & a 1 in 9" twist, Sig is 1 in 7" & A2 front sight. Ruger can do well with 55r bullets up to 69-75, but, i found the Clot (1 in 7") liked 75 gr & up which are too costly, imo. Overall, it feels smoother & well built! SgtRock,......out :ar15:

Love mine. Only flaw and this may be the case with most stock ARs is the heavy trigger pull. I just remedied this with a 3 lbs Timney trigger
