Thoughts on this 12 Varmint Savage right hand left port single shot?

Has anyone had an opportunity to see this rifle up close or even shoot one? As much as it might look strange, I find the design to make sense. More practical when shooting at the range, well for me anyway.

Or

Would the 12 varmint low profile be a better choice ? accuracy, design or ??

Are you talking about the LRPV or something else altogether?

If it is the LRPV you are asking about, they are a fantastic rifle. The port positioning does not affect how the rifle shoots, only how you load and unload it.
I find it hard to get into a rhythm with mine as I am used to the regular right port design but they are very accurate and loads of fun in the gopher fields.

I would buy another in a heartbeat, but next time it would be a 1:7 twist and a 6oz target trigger.
 
Will allow you to push the 75gr Amax to over 3200fps and yes, it will be hard on barrels.

But performance usually does. Would be an excellent LR plinker.

The LRPV is definitely geared for the bench shooter. The low profile for the walkabout varminter.

I had a low profile stock and really like the proportions. One of my favorites for a portable hunting rig. Heavier trigger suited for field use.

The RBLP is not really that useful if shooting prone/bipod. Better suited for the bench. The light trigger will be a joy off the bench too.

Either will be lots of fun and shoot well.

As others have said it is great for shooting from a bench or table whether it be gophers or targets. Because my summer hobby is varmint shooting from a table I nearly went with a new LRPV but decided to keep my VLP so that I could retain the magazine which I prefer for the small amount of coyote hunting o get to do in the winter. I plan to buy a Single Shot Follower so I can load singly while at the table this summer, as I plan to experiment with loads that have the bullet seated past what the magazine will allow.

If you are gonna do nearly all your shooting from a bench then it is a great choice, but if you want to shoot from other positions then you may want to go with the VLP.
 
I really like my LRPV. I have the .223, 1:7 twist and so far it stabalizes everything I have fed it. I am still working with various handloads. My father used it in our local benchrest match last year and won the factory class with it. The RB-LP design is great off the bench. It is a big heavy rifle though. I have carried it a bit in the hog fields and when spending a few hours walking, the weight is noticable. The trigger is excellent. I use a jewel on my custom 6BR, but the 6 ounce accutrigger isn't falling behind by much.
I have heard that faster twist barrels tend to foul faster. I am not an advocate of cleaning religiously. I clean my rifles when the groups start to open up. I can say that the Savage's groups will start to open up before the 6 will.....so maybe there is truth to that. That being said, the factory savage barrel is not my Maclennan barrel.
All in all, very accurate and reliable rifles. The light setting on the accutrigger was a bit to get used to, but it was a new design for me to tinker with too.
 
I did see a video of this rifle. Savage model 12 Benchrest Dual Port in 6br. The benchrest shooter didn't even lift his head to reload. Opened his left eye reload, bang eject out the case, repeat, it was an awesome group too!

What exactly to do mean by this. Before the sixth shot ? If so , that’s not good...

I would imagine having a custom barrel with a fast twist wouldn’t foul as fast but I’m not sure ?

Great advice all around. I just ordered a VLP in .223 because of the reasons you mentioned along with cheaper and more available ammo choices, a detach mag for quick loading/unloading getting in and out of vehicles, better balance etc. I bought a Bushnell Elite 3200 5-15x40 firefly scope for it. Where can you get a single shot follower?

What time frame did they give you when you ordered it? I ordered the same rifle at the beginning of Feb and was told up to 3 months.:eek: I am having a hard time waiting.
