Is there not a way to get notification when a new reply to a post that you either started or have replied to?

Right at the top right of the thread, click on Thread Tools, then Subscribe to this Thread...

ONLY IF you want to subscribe to it.
Also you can select NOT to be emailed every time there's a posting.
You can click on "Quick links" menu and select subscribed threads.
Those with unread posts will appear in bold.
