Good Day.

I recently got a steal of a deal on a brand new Browning X Bolt Western Hunter - 7MM RM. It comes with a 26" matte barrel with a factory muzzle brake.

I would like to find a thread cap for it as I am not a real fan of muzzle brakes ( loudness). I have shot with magnum type calibers all my life so recoil is certainly not an issue.

I have done some "Google" research and have not really found any relevant information. In fact, one individual got misleading information on the thread size from Browning. And they don't have them.

Some say it has a 5/8-24 thread...others 13mm X.75...somewhat confusing.

I know the Hell's Canyon models ( factory muzzle brakes) include a thread protector in the box, which is a great idea.

Can anyone help me with information as to where I may be able to find one of these?

Thanx in advance.

If you sent your muzzle brake to a machinist, so he could measure the thread pitch, and you told him what you had in mind, he could probably help you out. If you aren't going to use the brake, what about cutting it off before the vents, and then thread it back on?

Many brakes have been cut and made into thread protectors.

If you want to keep the brake, take it to any gunsmith or gun friendly machine shop and measure the threads. Or buy a caliber and thread pitch gauges and measure it yourself.

13mm is roughly 0.512"
5/8 is 0.625"

I went through this recently with a pre-owned 338 WM Ruger Hawkeyes rifle that I picked up equipped with a factory muzzle brake. I removed the brake and took it over to the local industrial supply shop and they helped me to determine that a common 9/16" UNF bolt screws into the brake. So a 9/16" UNF nut with the flats ground off could be used as a thread protector.

You might consider keeping the brake functionality as it should be a selling feature if you decide to sell the rifle.

I used a threaded bushing instead and reduced the diameter to match the barrel diameter and cut it to length. Cheap and easy. :)

buy a 5/8 24 nut , try it on your gun , if it fits buy a 2" long 5/8 24 bolt. take them to a machinest, tell him to turn the nut down to the barrel dia. and face one end square.he can use the bolt to hold the nut in the chuck.

Thanx for the info and PMs received so far.

I do not want to tweek the brake as I want to keep it should I decide to sell it later.

Sent email to Browning yesterday and no reply yet.

Also checked with Brownells and got the following reply:

"Jay, Unfortunately I do not have any information on the muzzle thread size of those rifles, and have had no luck finding it."

Thanks, Kasey

Well just heard from Browning. They will send me a thread cap...free of charge!

Obviously an excellent company to deal with.

Thanx to all that responded...looks like I'm looked after!
