I'd like to cut back a couple stock 10/22 barrels and thread the ends.

A machinist here at work said he would do it for me, but just needed the particulars.

Does anyone know:

A) What is the min. length you can cut them back to? (including thread length)

B) What is the standard thread type used?

C) What else I need to tell him to get the job done right? :D

I hate to say this, but I THINK threading a stock barrel is illegal. Purchasing a threaded barrel is different however. They usually come in 1/2 28" and I'm sure the factory would have turned them either on a brass pilot or between centers to keep the threads concentric to the bore and not the OD of the barrel.

Actually, you are wrong. It's legal to thread a barrel. Cutting the barrel les than 18.5 inches is illegal. Buying one manufactured less than 18.5 is legal.

You can only cut the barrel down to a length of 18.5 inces. The standard thread is 1/2x28.

The standard thread is 1/2x28.

The hole in the receiver is bigger then 1/2".
11/16", so, a standard 3/4-16 tap could be used.
The receiver will have to taped in a mill, after it has been properly indicated, the barrel (or a new barrel) needs to be threaded for 3/4-16 in the lathe.

*Sorry, did not read the post correctly*

I've had several done by a machinist friend of mine. Very simple and easy to do. 1/2 x 28 is the best thread for most applications as it matches .223 AR flash hiders, etc...

If you want 16.5", find a barrel from a 10/22 CCR, or an aftermarket barrel, otherwise to stay legal you can only thread, not shorten a standard 18.5" 10/22 barrel.
