Threading barrel for muzzle break - what should it cost?

Fit the brake to a shoulder. Torques right on.
A lock nut will also work, particularly if there is no shoulder.
Set screws, Loctite are sort of improvised solutions.
Do it right the first time.

Got an email back from The Shooting Centre in Calgary. They want $280 just to put threads on the barrel. Seems a bit steep to me. The advise given above is great and I really appreciate it! I will do some research on brakes etc. and buy one before getting it fitted. Brentwood Bay sounds like a nice place to visit ;)
That seems a little steep to me, I had a local smith build me a brake two or three years ago and I he charged me $168 to thread and re-crown the barrel, build from scratch, blue to match the barrel and install it on a rem700. He told me 6 weeks because of work load and had it back to me in about a week and a half.

I recently threaded a stainless Sako 85 barrel for a fancy brake the guy bought in the US. Thread was 1/2"-28 UNEF.

This was for one of my customers so he got a freebie..:)

Took at least an hour. I wouldn't do it for anyone else for less than $100.

Threaded, timed, bored out for 7mm...$150. Could have paid a bit more for a taper, but going for function over form. Didn't want to turn it down and lose effectiveness.
End result is a 7mm rem that feels like you are shooting a 6mm rem. Plus I shoot it better now. Well worth it to me.

I agree with all the comments above. if you are just getting the gun threaded 5/8x24 for example it would cost 100 dollars at our shop.We offer two options When it comes to a brake however. an installed permanent brake will work the best with the closest bore diameter to match your rifle. It will be timed properly and non removable. The second option is a removable brake with a 5/8x24 jam nut, this brake will have a slightly larger bore diameter because it is removable and makes it possible to put the brake on and 30cal rifle with a 5/8x24 thread.

About an hours labour. So like everyone else has said $50-the sky's the limit. I wouldn't spend more than $80-$100 if that is all you can find locally. After that it becomes cheaper to ship to one of the competent smiths on here.
