I'd like to get the muzzle of a tikka rifle threaded so I can install a muzzle brake. I was quoted $400 by a gunsmith to do the work. He said he can do it without removing the barrel from the action. This sounds like a lot for what I have been told is a fairly easy job. Is $400 the going rate for this job?

Sure, it's a "fairly easy job" when you have built years of experience and $10,000 worth of equipment in your shop. Try and have some respect for the time and work required to be able to do such work properly.

I have since been quoted $80-$150 for the same work from multiple reputable gunsmiths. To imply that I should pay 3-5 times as much for the same work because someone doesn't have the adequate experience or equipment to do the job in an efficient and timely manne is just ridiculous.

Also, I work just as hard for my money and to expect me to pay so much more for a job to fund someone else's learning curve or to help build a shop with "$10,000 worth of equipment" is disrespectful, not inquiring about the going rate of a job. I didn't imply the job is easy, but was told that by others and was inquiring if that is the case. You probably should have the read my post until you understood what you're reading before responding so disrespectfully.

Awwww ..... did I hurt your feewings? Did you expect soft and cuddly from someone whose board name is I DON'T CARE ABOUT YOU ?

I did not imply at all that you should pay the $400 you got quoted. My comments were limited to your implication (yes you did imply it) that it's an easy job. The majority of people who think machine work is easy, haven't ever done it or have the first clue what is involved.

To be clear, I don't care one bit how much you pay to have your barrel threaded.
