I'm interested in having the front sight pushed back and barrel threaded on a new model Mini 30.

-Can this be accomplished while maintaining full barrel length and NR classification?

-Can anyone recommend a gunsmith who can do this? Ontario preferred but I can ship if necessary.

Found someone who can do the threading but they said they don't think they will be able to move the front sight back because it is pinned. Anyone have any experience with this?

f:P:

Remove pin. Move sight rearwards. Drill hole. Re-pin. It's not rocket science. You may want to find someone who has a better idea what they are doing if they think this simple procedure is not possible.

Rugers are usually fitted together very precisely. Just removing a pin likely won't be enough.
What are you putting on the muzzle that it needs a thread? There may be a better way.

Just want to put a flash suppressor on there like the short barreled (restricted) mini 30 has. I see there are slip-on comps/FHs out there but none seem to be designed to fit over the new models with the winged front sights.

I'm looking to do the same thing on my Mini 30. The closest thing i found is the Mo-Reaper...it replaces the factory winged sight and uses the stock pin location, but I don't think they ship to Canada. Probably will have to get it threaded...

It can be done fairly easily by a machinist with the right tools and equipment-

If you can find someone with a larger bore lathe that can swallow the receiver its a much faster job. It saves you from removing the barrel. Otherwise you need a special wrench to remove the barrel.

Remove the sight- Pop out the pin and remove the front sight. The sight might tap off with a hammer or it might need coaxing by a press. Either way you must be careful not to damage the the sight or the crown.

Ream out the sight to a nominal size- (I think its .562 or .625)

Machine the end of the barrel for the thread and a larger step further back to the nominal size of your sight. (Thread is usually 1/2 - 28TPI) A slight interference fit on the sight is desirable.

Install the sight and line it up. If the sight is on the loose side then apply some loctite underneath it and let it dry. Once it's dry you can carefully drill out a new hole for the retaining pin.

You may need to bead-blast the newly machined finish to match the rest of the gun. The one in the picture was a custom barrel that was left with the machine finish.

Install your pin and the flash hider and you are good to go!
