Three questions for the AR gurus

I’ve got three questions:

I have a Norinco CQ311 and want to put on an A2 stock or, Yankee Hill Skeleton stock, or ACE ARFX stock.

My questions are:

1) Is it difficult to rethread the metric buffer tube on a Norinco AR? – I’ve worked as an auto mechanic and have the proper tools to tap, and rethread, for the imperial bolt size but I’m worried since the tube is Aluminum.

2) Also, will either the Yankee Hill Skeleton stock or ACE ARFX stock use the Norinco factory (metric) bolt? – This is the way I would prefer to go rather than modifying the thread pitch.

3) Who is the cheapest source for these stocks in Canada? – I’m trying to budget for a Questar AR, and I don’t want to put to much coin into my Norinco AR (it is what it is; a nice reliable, but poorly finished, starter AR)

Thanks everyone,

Jeff

An imperial stock goes on with little work. Make sure the receiver is in a wood lined vise. You will need oil and a brush. Sort of like tap and die process, start it, turn back, clean threads with brush, oil and repeat. The process will take under 10 minutes. The Norinco bolts works inside imperial stocks, no problem.

Fixed stocks? Not sure. But folders...

Most serious AR guys and the armourers don't touch Norinco's sorry...

Hey man... 'Does yoor nose bleed a lot with it being so high in the air
:D

I've seen way more "name brand" AR's fail than 311's...

Uhm lets see

Colt, Bushy and Diemaco run Armourer courses...
anyone of them based on a NORC?

Why on earth would you buy a gun that does not have 100% parts commonality with the rest of the AR family?

Its not snobbery -- its practicality.

And FWIW - I have yet to see a true factory gun from a ABCD company #### the bed -- its when hacks put substandard crap on them -- or someone tries to build one when they dont know what they are doing.

I don’t know what you mean? - I'm not playing stupid, I really don’t know what your saying.

Jeff

EDIT: OK, I get it. You're talking about those AR's (ABCD = Brand) that do fail, and saying they are not factory guns. I'd agree %100 with that.

I'll tell you why I bought a Norinco CQ311:

Account Balance = $1,300.00 - $500.00 Norinco CQ311 (NIB)
Account Balance = $800.00

Jeff -- sorry got sidetracked and did not proof read -- I was thinking I was doen that sentence.

My point was a reply to 667 - who said factory guns calf more often than Norc's.

I wont own a Norc since
1) its Chi-Com state industires
2) its not 100% compatible with other AR's
(yeah yeah Colt's stupid pins)

I think I answered the questions at hand and considering he owns a Norc, there is no point in debating the ABCDs versus Norinco. That being said, I would not do anything more than give it A1 furniture, or maybe A2, or put on a cheap $60 retractable stock on it. If your $500 has no buttstock (likely) put an advertisement for an original Norc stock in the EE, and you can probably get one for about $20 since many people changed it to A2.

No, my Norinco CQ311 could have been one of the first ones purchased in Canada for all I know, they weren’t for sale anywhere at the time.

I bought it years ago for $500 (NIB) fresh out of a storage facility in Ontario (it had been sitting there waiting for approval since the mid 80's) it’s got everything but a nice finish, imperial threading, and a 1 in 7 barrel.

I've handled the C7 when I was in the army reserves. I liked the Norc because it was reminiscent of the C7.

Though not nearly as nice, I could afford it at the time and still buy my books for school.

Jeff

EDIT TO ADD: Thanks for the info. Deckard. I may try a cheapo CAR stock from marstar.

Hungry here: Jeffman, God bless you for still being a student and balancing the AR addiction. I've been there, it's hard. Hang it there and keep shooting no matter what. Cheers.

How much of a problem is the Colt thing? what's affected by it exactly?

You can't swap uppers. That's why I will never buy Colt, the non-standard pin sizes were designed to prevent the civilian owners from using uppers that were intended for military/LEO use only. Their corporate branch is anti-civvy, anti-gun. Phuck em'.

I have the proper tap I could lend you if you want to chase the threads to the correct size. Let me know.
Josh

p.s.
The new Colt AR's use the small pins so the compatability issue is no longer a problem.

Its not hard to find the offset pins to swap uppers.

Yeah, but why bother when there are so many uppers out there that don't need offset pins? Frankley, i'd pay more for a RRA than a colt, because of what Kevin said, any part will fit, any day of the week. Playing the name brand game is just expensive snobbery, and in the case of the colt name, you don't get a product as good as the others out there.

But Colt's have tapered pins! ;)
