whats your preference??

Two things that don't feel natural to me are thumbhole stocks and straight stocks, color me weird but if it isn't natural and comfortable I can shoot worth a damn..............

I like a thumbhole style stock on a bench, but nowhere else.

Lever rifles with open sights I prefer a straight stock.

Hunting rifles I prefer a pistol grip.

Wingshooting I prefer a prince of whales grip.

We all have our preferences, and none are wrong!!

I like both... thumbhole stocks are not just nice on the bench, they are also very stable for offhand shooting... they are not good in the prone position... personally, I have not shot prone in years. I prefer traditional stocks for carrying and they are marginally faster to get into action... for the most part, I "hunt" with traditional stocked rifles and "shoot" with thumbhole stocked rifles... but there are many exceptions to that rule.

Yes, thumbholes are wonderful off a bench. I have no use for them in a hunting rifle, although I guess if I were to hunt with a semiauto (unlikely!) a thumbhole wouldn't bother me. If I need to manipulate a bolt between shots, I sure don't want to be threading my thumb into and out of that hole each time. And if I am using an exposed-hammer gun, or any gun that is equipped with a tang safety, the thumbhole is just a PITA for me.

I love the thumbhole stock on my Savage MKII BTVS, for just about anything. I am having a custom built and I'm leaning towards a thumbhole stock for that as well.
I also like the straight grip stocks on field carry rifles.

Not much to add. Own thumbhole for hunting and as other have pointed out they are not as fast as pistol but i find it easier to stabilize as i get in "position".

Thumbhole on the bench for me just feels right

The only thumbhole stock I have is on my F-Class rifle and I like for strictly shooting prone.
As for hunting rifles I grew up on the farm shooting straight stock lever rifles, but my present favourite is a recent acquisition with a wonderfully fitting Bansner stock.
I have had other rifles with Mark Bansner's creations and always kicked myself after parting with them so no more, this one stays..

I have exactly one rifle with a thumbhole stock. It is a very heavy rimfire benchrest rifle. It's ok, but I am not fond of thumbhole stocks.

I would have changed this one out as well, but it is a fully adjustable unit, and could not easily be replaced, so it will stay.

Regards, Dave.

First used a thumbhole stock as a child. My father and a couple of his friends used to build stocks that are easily on par with the nicest stuff on the market today. I was never and still not sure what to make of them.

Can't stand straight stocks.

I don't want say an AR "pistol grip" on a hunting rifle but often find myself wanting a more vertical angle pistol grip like the McMillian A5 for example. I've never bothered to search for a very light weight hunting rifle stock with such a grip (because the A5 is NOT a hunting rifle stock).

So, to answer your question.... pistol grip but I'd like a more extreme pistol grip.

I don't have and probably never own a tumbwhole stock.
Personally, I think they're fuggley.

Pistol or straight grip.
Never gave much thought to the sentence above on the straight
until I purchased my BLR.
