Hi everyone, going to purchase a new stock for my rifle, ive never shot anything with a thumbhole stock. They look like they would be pretty comfortable. Whats everyones thoughts? Thanks for your time

Well, you'll either love it or you'll hate it, so try to hold one if you can. I bought a Savage that came with one and I really enjoy it. It's excellent for shooting prone (99% of my shooting) and offhand shots I find I get a little bit more stability. It isn't awesome for the bench though because of the angle you tend to hold it at I wiggle quite a bit when I'm just trying to shoot off the bipod vs. a conventional stock. Could be just me though. Another thing to think about is the winter shooting, it's awesome for summer obviously because you aren't wearing gloves, but in the winter with big gloves I imagine it would get a little bit awkward. Chances are you'd be taking them off to feel the trigger anyways though.

Hope this helps.

If it is a deer rifle you can't bring it to your shoulder a push the safety off without removing your hand from the pistol grip. It is more awkward that way but it is really nice to shhot with. Try one.

IMO it is just a slightly more natural position, kind of like pointing strait ahead(in the pew-pew-pew hand gesture) as opposed to slightly down on a conventional stock if I am making sense.

I like the Boyds thumbhole stock on higher recoil rifles my 338WM for instance, it does make switching the safety more awkward on most rifles.

I think they are wonderful for target and long distance or precision varmint shooting, but a terrible handicap for quick and accurate instinctive shooting at various targets from various positions that commonly happens in real big game hunting. If you limit your hunting style to the positions and time required to use a thumbhole stock, they work great!

Repeat shots with a thumb hole stock are a pain, like pulling your hand out of a glove then having to re-insert it losing the sight picture for round # 2.OK on a varmint/sniper heavy barrel gun but nothing I want for hunting.........JMO......Harold
