I have a mosin nagant wood stock I’m planning on removing the old stain down to bare wood then wrapping wire around the stock then using a heat gun to burn the stripes into the wood. Then I will use a light stain or just clear coat it depending on how it turns out. Or if there is a better way of doing this please share. This is an extra wood stock I bought that is in rough shape. No harm to the original rifle.

I’m interested in seeing how it turns out. I’ve seem folks online do it with a propane torch. It’s possible, that you might not get enough “burn” with a heat gun. But if the gun is not enough, you can always go to a plan B. Good luck.

I think the heat gun would be too broad in it's heat application to get the stripes you're looking for. The small, hand held propane/MAP gas torches with the one pound(?) bottles is the way to go. Don't really need to wrap wire, unless you're maybe looking for a sharper line?

It sounds like OPs intention is the heat gun will heat up the wire and that will burn the wood, rather than heat gun itself burning the wood.

Never heard it done this way but I'd love to see the results!

If you're wrapping wire around the stock, do you have a power supply you can attach to said wire to heat it using electricity? I'm interested as well to see how this project turns out

This is what happens with you apply voltage to it!

and this is a SKS I saw that got fake stripes. Wrap in wet rope and hit it with a blowtorch. A heat gun isnt going to do anything!

Apply a clear finish in a striped pattern.
When dry, apply stain. Additional coats as necessary.
Apply clear top coat finish.
Avoid burning, etc.

If you have a fire pit and dead pines nearby, you can go old school and make some pine oil and let the natural fibres shine through.

Heat up a piece of coat hanger with propane torch, holding with two pliers bend hot hanger around stock.

A talented gentleman 2 towns over builds custom wood furniture and built us a table and the process he uses electrocutes the wood.
Excellent results.

Rifle has been striped and I used a heat gun to pull the cosmoline out of the wood and wiped it off with a paper towel. Wired up ready for the blow torch.1742197582388.jpeg
