You might want to consider finishing in garnet shellac. That would look more factory correct, whether tiger striped or not.

It will darken it a little, but you’d still see the stripes I think.

You buy garnet as flake and dissolve it in methylated spirits.

A french polish might look a little fancy for an SKS.

Do what the combloc did, clear lacquer finish
Do it outside in nice weather
Two / three coats 24 hours between coats or longer
Turns out great for the original look. Runs a bit in places, but, the original did
