Tightening Butt in Taper on No 5 Mk 1

Just got the rifle, it looks great but is very loose, with much twist at the butt, I am intending to bed it there, then remove it and relieve the material so that it is tightening on the taper, the option is to cut the taper back, any arguements in favor of either?

There is too much twist with the stock tight right up to the metal, but I do have a lathe, and anything that needs to be done in the bolt or spacer department I can do.
