I phoned today to order a Tikka T3 Lite in .223 only to find that you can only get the 1 in 8" twist barrel. Tikka's website also lists a 1 in 12" twist which is what I would prefer.

I'd like to know what to expect when shooting 50 grain and lighter bullets.

The .223 I am replacing with the Tikka (mainly to get a removeable magazine) has never shot a bullet larger than 50 grains and I just can't see spending money on a rifle that is not optimized for that round. Perhaps someone knows where to find the elusive Tikka that I want.

I had a 1 in 12 twist Tikka T3 .223 that I sold, and have since acquired a 1 in 8 twist Tikka T3 .223. My understanding is that most of the Tikka .223's coming into the country now are of the latter variety, and although it is possible that you could have one in 1 in 12 ordered, it may take awhile. (Btw, my 1 in 8 Tikka shoots the 45 gr and 50 gr bullets just fine).

I was in WSS the other day and the Tikka T3 Lite they had in 223 had a 1-8" twist. 9" may be more versatile, but 8" would be my choice if I was building one.

Thanks for the help guys.

I went ahead and ordered the 1:8 twist Tikka. Working up a new 60gr. load should be fun.

I do have a large box of 36gr Varmint Grenades. I assume that this longer bullet will shoot well in a fast barrel.

My T3 Varmint (heavy barrel 1 in 8") shoots everything from 45 gr up to 75 gr bullets with ease. The only ammo it doesn't shoot well is Winchester of any kind. It loves AE, Federal and Remington factory, and I have pet loads for 60 HP and 63 SP bullets from Sierra.
Haven't tried the varmint grenades yet, but I have no doubt you will be very pleased with this rifle.
