Tikka 260 or 6.5x55?

I am hoping to order a new gun tomorrow since I can't find what I want in the EE. My question is 260 or 6.5x55. I s one inherently more accurate than the other? I realize they are about the same ballistically and I really don't care if one is 100 fps faster, I also don't care about the availability of factory ammo(I will reload). I believe I will order a Tikka T3. I was going to buy a savage and build a custom 6.5Creedmoor, but Savage has now priced themselves out. I will use the gun for target shooting, silhouettes and hunting.
Please help me decide.

Definately the 6.5x55. On the face of it the ballistics are very similar but factory ammo is more varied with the Swedish cartridge. For handloaders brass is available from Lapua and you can stiffen up the loads from the rather anemic factory loads available. In addition you can vary the seating depth of the bullet much more with the Swedish cartridge because you have a longer magazine to play with and you don't have to contend with invading powder space which is a possibility when loading longer bullets in the .260.
Incidentally my T3 in 6.5x55 shoots 1/2 MOA all day long from a sporter barrel.

I'm a .260 fan because the factory ammo is generally a bit more powerful. I realize you plan to handload, but often I'll buy a couple boxes of factory stuff and shoot them rather than buying brass. OPlus I've already had a 6.5 Swede and would like to try the newer round.

Is there any chance you can order a Savage already chambered to the 6.5 Creedmore? Apparently their factory will do a lot of different chamberings at a slight charge. Ditto if you want a floorplate or drop-out mag.
 
If your main goal is target or silhouette shooting I would choose the 260. A bit less recoil and I think a bit more accuracy potential.


The 6.5X55 would get my nod in a hunting rifle.
 
I would stick to the 6.5x55 there are just more options for brass that way . My hunting partner just bought a 260 and the only companies that make brass are remington and nosler custom,not much or a selection

Win and Lapua .243 necked up or .308 necked down work for .260
 
Ya, I think it's 260. But I've phone over a dozen dealer, and nothin'! If any of you can find me one that would be nice, but I want a detachable mag. Tikka would be nice, new or used.
 
Go with 6.5x55. There's no advantage in the .260 given that Tikkas are all long action.
