I posted it here when I received a first gen Tikka 308 CTR. http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/1279049-Finally-My-Tikka-CTR-in-308!
After having quite a few rifles in 308 and 300WM in both hunting and tactical versions, I then dove into the 6.5. After some research, it was a done deal. I needed to make my (love this rifle!) Tikka 308 CTR into a 6.5 Creedmoor CTR (looks like Tikka might be doing this in the future, but not with a Bartlein barrel
).
3 in 1 - One gun for game, for PRS (and long range target shooting) and for long range varmint hunting sounded like a good idea to me, especially out here in the wide open spaces of Alberta.
Keeping the weight down means I can hunt with this rig and carry it over the shoulder easily. If you are not familiar with the 308 round/ballistics compared to 6.5 please do some research on your own as I am not on the forums much to answer your questions.
I wanted to keep it compact and somewhat light, so I had a Bartlein 6.5 medium palma contoured barrel cut down to 20”, same size as the original CTR barrel (we cut the thin end (end) off of the Bartlein barrel so it was still meaty) and threaded the barrel (reused my Tikka CTR 308 brake on this rig).
At 20” FPS suffered with the 140’s (and all other bullet weights) compared to my 24” 6.5, but I loaded some very hot loads to make up for the loss in barrel length.
I did swap out the CTR’s factory 0 MOA picatinny rail for a 20 MOA version giving me a total of 110 MOA ups with this US Optics scope and more real estate (the 20 MOA rail was longer than the stock rail) for an US Optics Rail Mounted Swivel ACD, (it folds away when not in use, also comes with a screw on cap not shown here, or needed here) and an angle finder (Nightforce Angle Degree Indicator).
Total cost for the new Bartlein barrel and all gunsmithing associated with the install (cut to length, chamber, install, thread for brake and remove the old 308 barrel), $748CA. No, that is not a typo…
Love the Tikka action, smooth as silk, love the short clean flush to trigger guard 10 round double stack mags (Sako TRG-22 Magazines), overall weight of the gun and all that goodness the 6.5 has to offer! (FYI for new shooters, 6.5 Creedmoor uses a 308 case/brass necked down so the Tikka CTR mags work 100% in 6.5 Creedmoor, and other 308 case variants(check them internets)
Might not be for everyone, but it sure suits my needs perfectly and I figured I would post this incase anyone else was interested in the same setup.
Here is my tack driver with my “custom” rattle can finish
Thanks,
Rob
