Hey,

Currently have a tikka t3 in 30.06. Been using it for hunting...looking to move towards some range shooting throughout the year. However, the stock is a sore spot for me.

I happened upon the KRG Xray, attractive look/price/ user reviews are great...but the aics mags wont support long action at this time.

So do i sell my like new t3 and search out a .308/.300wsm.

Or is there a comparable skeleton style chassis that im not seeing, that wont break the bank?

Thanks

Is it a Lite model?

The action is a great spot to start with so if you wanted to do it it would not hold you back. The aftermarket for it now is pretty good and is getting better.

Lots of stock options for the Tikka, I have a MacMillan on one, its heavy, A3-5 and ~$1300.

For targets I have stuck to the 30-06 (regular hunting rifle), its a Sako but barrels come from the same place.

For the Tikka a Yodave spring and a 20moa Talley rail and an appropriate scope will get you reliable hits at 1000+ yards.

Ascetically the Tikka stock leaves much to be desired. For serviceability and in unison to the action and barrel it's a combination that's hard to beat.

It is a t3 light, blued. Nothing fancy. Local shops are saying they will buy it for 500 to 600 upon inspection. New .308 is 800ish plus tax.

During deer season im finding the LOP is uncomfortable (extra layers). A part of this is looking for a sight with greater eye relief (current is vortex diamondback).

The large lop adjustment with the xray caught my eye.

Keep the rifle you have and pick up an MDT chassis in either LSS, LSS-XL, or Tac 21. With the MDT you can stick with long action and use their magazines that allow for 3.56" cartridge length.

I would say stick with the 30-06, with modern powders it is a lot more potent of a cartridge than people think. Think of the perfect compromise between 308 and 300Wm. Loaded to modern pressures it only gives up about 100-150 fps to the 300wsm.

That has been my attraction to 30-06 as well.

Make sure you confirm what OAL will function in your rifle. Even if you get a longer mag into a chassis, can you get the ammo into the action?????

personally, I would not get too worried about det AICS mags. I single feed pretty darn fast and that is now an "unlimited" mag AND the ability to set the bullets I want close to where they will do the most good. or just run the factory mag... they work and feeding is assured

The 30-06 and modern loading/bullets will be roughly 150yds behind the 300WM ballistically... not much lost.

Consider - recoil, there is going to be quite a bit

Barrel heat - with a sporter barrel, you will need far more down time to keep things from melting.

A sporting hunting rifle can easily shoot as far as anything else BUT the comfort, ergonomics and heat stability will be greatly compromised. If on a budget, why not put on a Boyds stock with the factory det mag? For not much money, you have as good a det mag as any AICS set up and you only loose a couple of rds before reloading (odds are you will need to stop anyways to cool the pipe).

Chassis are fun and look cool but can cost alot of money. Will you fit? Will you actually like being behind one? Will it do anything more then a properly set up conventional stock?

But either way, load up some heavier slugs and send them... Lots of great options today.

Let me know if I can help with stuff.

I'm running a T3 with an EMP barrel as well as a bolt trueing job, all in an MDT LSS chassis, so far looking for 200 grain loads, I've got between 0.6 to 0.2 groups, This in a 14# 300WSM long range hunting set up. I could save a good pound if I took the Vortex Razor off.
