Hey all. So i picked up a Tikka M55 Delux in 243 the other day of the internet. Gun looked to be in very good condition.
Once it arrived i ripped the gun outta its box and quickly looked down the bore.. YIKES!!!!! not looking so good.. appon vigorous cleaning and now getting clean patches my hopes of saver copper foul are now left short and realizing im more then likly going to need a new barrel on this old beautiful rifle. Since the bluing is so rich on the action i would hate to throw a stainless barrel on the old girl.

So my question to you is... Is there any chance in hell of finding a tikka T3 Barrel that would thread on.. Providing it has the same thread and contour and specs... or would i be futher ahead to get a new barrel put on and then sent away to get reblued.

Thanks again.

just another thought while im sitting here thinking.... i dont knwo the exact contour of the barrel but what about rechambering the rifle in 6mm remington or 243 Ackley improved. even cutting back the barrel and re threading... is that also a possiblity?

1) Clean it and shoot it before you spring for a new barrel. It may still shoot fine.
2) As for rechambering it to a longer cartridge: measure the magazine OAL first as it may not handle a 6mm Rem
3) The breech of a Tikka M55 barrel has an unusual ("unique"!) reverse cone protruding from the chamber... rounds have to feed properly to enter the chamber and I "believe" the factory chambered the M55 this way because the bolt flange/cocking piece does not protect the shooter from gas that might otherwise find its way into the left raceway. The Tikka T3 is not the same.
4) and yes magazines (in any calibre) are very hard to find if you lose yours..

Rethreading can always be done assuming you have adequate chamber area left after the old threaded section is removed and some of your current chamber is sacrificed to create the new shank

Thanks AP. just got the scope on tonight and bore sighted. Will go out tomorrow with some factory ammo and try it out. Hopefully it shoots. I'm praying. There is from what I can see about 2" of throat wore completely down. I have scrubbed the barrel for about 2 hours with copper eliminator until the patches can clean. Like i said. I hope it shoots.

On the better note I'm really beginning to like this rifle. Seems like a quality piece other then they didn't think to far in advance for the fine adjustment on the trigger.. Take it down to 2 pounds and cannot get the mag back in lol. O well. 3 pounds it is.
Thanks for the info!

Well worst case is you could get it rebarreled in 243, 22/250 or 308 etc... however personally I would insist that the breech end of a replacement barrel duplicates the factory design and dimensions etc ... even if the smith had other ideas. The Finns that designed and built that rifle didnt just fall off a turnip truck and I am pretty sure they had a reason for setting up the face of the breech with the cone the way they did. I would not try to get cute and ignore this or let anyone talk you into accepting any other barrel face arrangement.

I tried shooting the gun yesterday with 80factory Remington corelokt and got at 4" group . Not looking to impressive. I will try it again today and see if it gets any better but I'm doubting. If it doesn't shoot I will either get the work done or sell it and maybe buy another 243.... It's a shame this has happened but when u buy things off the Internet without looking at the firearms 1st your about to get burned once in a while

Thanks again AP
