Bought a used Tika 223 Barnett took it out for the first time with a bunch of loose 223 that I had laying around in my gun vault
I shot a bunch and I just put the rifle away went out to Camp for two weeks. I just took it out and I noticed the barrels bore is covered in rust gonna clean it out. I really hope it’s OK. Is anybody ever done anything like this? I feel really stupid. I didn’t really think 223 could be corrosive

Like the bore is rusting out on you? :(

I've heard some lots of Chinese 223 were corrosive, no idea if thats true or when.

Whats the headstamp on the brass/ammo look like, I've seen grumblings of some people saying it was never produced corrosive, i bought some old looking blue box stuff many years ago that i suspect was corrosive, i just shot it all off and cleaned it as such, never confirmed if it was or not

All brass was rem and fed except this one it says PSD 15 apparently South Korean not supposed to be corrosive.
I’ve dumped two electric kettles full of boiling water with dish soap and as clean right up, I think the barrels absolutely fine sure scared me

Could it have been rusty at the time of purchase? Give it a good bristle brushing, good deep clean should do the trick.
+1. Unless you are shooting corrosive ammo you don't need to clean your rifle every time you shoot it. I clean the barrels only when accuracy is affected.

Your barrel will be fine after you clean out the rust.

I suspect the rust is from the rifle being stored somewhere damp or moisture in the barrel if you are not shooting corrosive ammunition.

That's PMC 5.56 definitely not corrosive, how rusty is the bore, is it possibly copper fowling you're seeing

Well after the boiling water it cleaned right up and I just took her out and she still shoots like a champ
I really don’t know what all the crap in the barrel was carbon maybe but I’m really glad and happy it worked out

Here's a short tale about a rusty Tikka 204 I bought used, not knowing it had a rusty bore

The rifle shot reasonably well, nothing to suspect. Then I bought a Teslong and probed all of the rifles, nothing wild until I got to this 204

Good GAWD!!!

Scrub scrub scrub with this and that, got the orange out but ugliness lurked beneath

If any cartridge is going to be negatively effected by a bumpy ride down the bore, you'd think a thin jacketed 32gr Vmax @ 3900 fps would be very sensitive to such bull####

It's a real good shooter despite the pitted bore

39gr Sierra @ 460Y the other day

Pitted bore, not a desired feature...but it might shoot juuuust fine
