Data on savage 10tr
http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/1019704-Savage-10TR-le-military/

So looking for a double duty rifle (well for now at least). 308 is caliber I want so both fit that bill and I want a heaver barrel for target work so again both fit the bill. the savage longer barrel will have advantage at longer ranges but hey I am in Ontario 200yards best range we got around here. I also may end up using this for hunting, so tikka will have weight and size advantage but form what I gather that savage is not that heavy either. So tikka action is butter while the 10tr apparently not so much but both are sub moa toys and would work for getting into the persision game and both could serve as hunting rifles if i get license and plan a trip before i get dedicated hunting rifle rig.

Price is little over 700 for savage and about 1k for the tikka. So yes a difference but is it worth it.

so hey figured I would toss it out there, what would you take and why.

and no i am not interested in a rem 700.

Tikka!

Swap out the aluminum recoil lug for a steel one and your set.

I own quite a few Savages and they are great rifles that shoot well. But after seeing and using different rifles I won't be buying any more Savages.

I got the 10TR and have no regrets definitely couldn't complain over $656 (at the time). Managed these on my second time ever shooting bolt action rifles:

I don't excactly have the steadiest hands in the world and and my eyes were pretty bad at the time, but I've been told these are respectable results for a noob shooter.

The rifle is not heavy at all, and I could definitely lug that thing around all day if you plan to hunt with it.

If you're shooting 200m max, and you want all your rounds touching at that range, maybe that extra $300 for the Tikka can deliver?

if your budget allows get a tikka/sako. They are so smooooooth and accurate. Only "possible" downside is not that many aftermarket things compared to sav/rem's.

Tikka in a bell and carlson stock, and you are done!

I have one in .270 and it group much tighter then my 10TR (and I hand load)

I was in a similar spot as you 1 year ago... I bought the Savage 10tr. Figured the aftermarket parts would make up for the downsides of the rifle.
I sold the 10 tr.
If you want a target rifle, buy one. If you want a hunting rifle, buy the tikka. It will shoot targets also.

I can't wait to get my hands on a CTR. Just to your local shop and pick up any Savage center fire other than the axis and do the same with any Tikka and bit you will be sold on the Tikka as soon are you rack the bolt. You'll be really sold when you've dry fired the Tikka.

I am a huge fan of savage rifles and don't have any complaints. I recently bought a T3 Varmint and compared it alongside my VLP. I now have just the T3.

Yes the 0 MOA rail will come off no trouble, get yourself a NEAR or ATRS 20 MOA and have at it.

To the original poster, I would whole heartily recommend the Tikka over the Savage, and yes I have shot and owned both at some time or another. The after market argument for Savage is not an issue as far as I am concerned because you need to upgrade very little in the first place on a Tikka, and the biggest part you might to change to, i.e.: the stock, can be replaced by multiple brands of aluminum chassis, composite, and laminates in just about about every colour and configuration you can dream.

Posted these before....

I have since received some Low TPS rings, and it is much better than in these pics now!

I just picked up a Tikka CTR (I now have 3 Tikkas and one SAKO) They are absolutely the best rifle for your money, just my opinion of course, but I have owned may Remingtons, Savages, Winchesters and many others, and I always go back to Tikka/SAKO.

well looks liek i stay on track then. I wanted the ctr but then found the 10tr and it looks nice but hey based on the discussion and the fact the 10tr is not being made (found that out after making this post but there is some still around) the tikka will stay my choice.

Where did you pick up your CTR if you don't mind me asking?

The unfortunate thing about the tikka is that the canadian distributor is unwilling to bring them in with the set trigger. I have not found another source to import so If someone has an idea let me know. I have not seen any available in the USA either with the optional trigger

Maybe Stoeger will sell you just the trigger. No idea what the cost would be though. I had the set trigger on my T3 Sporter and it is scary light.

Tikka T3 at 1K...you better shop around, that seems a little high. I have on in a 270SWM, best bang for my buck, wouldn't look back.

I don't think it's high... we're not talking about a regular T3 lite... the CTR has a much more robust and solid stock, more like a Tikka Tactical. Plus the threaded muzzle, plus the metal double stack mags, plus teflon bolt, plus medium heavy barrel, etc.....
