Tikka T3 Tactical

I had an opportunity this morning, to take a T3 Tactical out to the range to give it a going over. The rifle isn't mine,, I just borrowed it and this is the second time I have shot it. It just arrived from the gunsmith after having a Holland muzzle brake installed.

Here is some facts about this particular rifle,
- Calibre: .308 Winchester
- Barrell Length: about 23 inches. From the bolt face to the end of the muzzle brake is just under 24 inches.
- Weight: 9.1 pounds (includes bolt, scope and empty mag,, not the bipod)
- Badger Rings
- older Leupold VariX Tactical 3-9 power

This is a picture of the rifle.

All shooting was done at 100 yards off of a bench. Weather was -5 degrees Celsius and overcast. Wind was coming in from the right rear and was a bit blustery,, but I don't think it had any effect on the groups fired. I didn't chrony any shots.

Group 1
- Brit 7.62 army stuff.
- 0.36" with 3 rds

Group 2 (adjusted scope right 3" and up 0.5"

Observations/Impressions
- This is a sweet light weight rifle with a really smooth action. All shooting was done with and from the magazine and all rounds loaded smoothly and without binding or missing a round.
- The Holland muzzle brake is very effective and the rifle did not move signifantly in recoil and I could easily keep the target within the scope during recoil.
- This Brit army ammo is hot and cold. Sometimes it shoots amazingly and other times it opens up to about 2 moa when you least need it to.
- I was shooting with a purpose,, quickly enough to start to get mirage off the barrel.
- The barrel of this rifle has a profile that I have never come across before. It tapers from the breach down to about 0.79" to where the barrel exits the stock and remains at this thickness until about 4" from the muzzle. At this point it begins to rapidly thicken up to a thickness of about 0.87" and stays this thick to the muzzle. Very odd.

Anyway,, I want one. It is much lighter than my 13 pound Steath rig I use now,, and shoots just as well.

Before going to the range I checked the tightness of all the screws on the sight system,, but didn't check the stock screws. After getting home and giving it some cleaning,, I checked the stock screws and both were easily tightend about 1/4 turn. I wonder just how much that affected the group size I shot. I suppose I will have to do this all over again.

The barrel thickens out towards the muzzle to accommodate the threading on the end. Screw off the cap and there's about 1/2" of threading for a break or a can. You probably never saw this since there was already a break on it.

How are these rifles bedded from the factory? Is there a bedding block, or pillars, or just the polypropelyne stock?

I've heard that it is difficult to bed a polypropelyne stock because the bedding compound may not stick. Any truth to this?

Quiet,

There doesn't appear to be any bedding to speak of. The action is screwed directly to the stock. The screw holes are lined with metal. There is a recoil lug that snaps the whole thing it. It is very tight. I'm not sure if the classic bedding compounds would hold or not.

This link at sniper central has some more observations on the bedding of the T3 Tactical.

It does seem to work though,,

PS: I'll take a picture of the inside of the stock and post it (might be a day or so,,)
PS2: See this link for an my pics of the stock.
