I have just recieved a .223 Tikka T3 Varmint from my dad for a gift. I bought a Nikon Buckmaster 6-18X40mm scope for it. I am interested in shooting to 1000 yards. My question is, is this gun and scope able of such a distance? I may not be quite ready yet but I am not sure if the .223 will make it that far but if so what will I need to make it go that far? Any tips would be appreciated, thanks!

Josh

You're right on the ball for the scope since your targets will be smaller..I like 4.5-14x50 for my varminters but that's just me!!

Your Tikka has a 1-8" twist rate (fast) and is theoretically ideal for shooting 80-85gr (heavy) bullets down a long range. For comparison, a 1-12" twist rate would be much preferred for 40-50gr high speed varmint killin' rounds. But a light, high speed bullet might break apart coming out of your faster twist gun.

"...lighter bullets faster..." Lighter bullets won't stabalize properly in that barrel. And they'll get blown all over the plce in the slightest wind.
Shooting at 1,000 yards isn't something you just do. You have to learn how. You get to deal with wind drift, bullet drop, mirage, etc.
If you're planning on shooting varmints at that distance you have to be able to see them. Your scope isn't what you use for spotting either. That's what a spotting scope is for. You'll likely want to look into a bipod too.

I have a bipod and a bushnell 15-45X50 spotting scope and I plan on working my way up by 100 yard incraments like setting goals for myself:)

First time I ever shot Target Rifle was at 500 yards. The next week I was shooting 1000 yards.:dancingbanana: You will learn more at 500-600 then at 100-200 yards. Get a good load with 75-80 bullets and a soild zero and away you go.

I was actually looking at getting that but my dad decided the $500 cheaper rifle with just a few less "fancy gadgets" would be a better deal:p So I already have the T3 Varmint.
