I'm getting into long range shooting and was wondering what you guys who have used the above 3 rifles think of them, in .308. They're all around the same price from various vendors and have comparable specs. Most of my shooting will be between 400m - 600m with a couple of trip a year (maybe just 1 a year... happy wife happy life) to Konought for 1000m competions.

I'm leaning towards the tikka because i've seen the t3 lite put bullets through the same hole all day long(EDIT:exaggeration but the rounds wound easily touch with the shooter doing his part at 100m). Rem I've had proplems with and before anyone blows smoke out their @$$ about it being used by military, LE etc.. lets not forgot the contract goes to the lowest bidder and not the best system(economic and political pressures are factors as well) I've never fired a CZ but have spoken with people who have them and they seem happy. Though I've never met anyone shooting out to 1000m with a CZ.

I know a 24" barrel is a little short but I don't expect to win at 1000m, just have fun.

Thanks for the help, gotta go change a diaper

edit: RE: remingtons. my comment was just to nip the "the army uses it so it must be good" argument in the bud. experience with the army says otherwise. prime example, everyone wants to have a jumprick not the issued ruck, and no, rucks and rifles are not the same but the principal is. I have 2 friends with 5r's and both 5r's shoot better then we do. I sold my good rem to fund this.

How about a Savage?

I have no experience with any of the rifles you have chosen. But I do have a few Savages and their top end model 12 rifles shoot very well. Not the one hole you speak of though.

I'm thinking about savage too but couldn't fit it in title. I think the 1 hole had a lot to do with shooter.

Lots of guys have the 5R's and use them out to 1k

5R has the best barrel. IMO

no reason with any of the rifles and some minor mods like bedding you cant be competitave at 1000. Just gota practice all the fundementals of shooting.

You sure that contract went to the lowest bidder??? Don't think the military does all it's testing just to say we'll take the cheapest widget.

Wonder what action they are basing all these customs build rifles with custom actions on?? Maybe some research into custom rifles would be a good start.

It isn't the arrow in most cases, it is the Indian.

Buy what fits you best and that is what you will have the best success with.Nothing wrong with any of the three mentioned.

I've got a Savage Model 12 LRPV in 204 ruger. It shoots in the .2's. Personally I've never seen a one hole group. I have seen all the bullets touching.

I ordered a Savage Model 12 F-class in 6mm norma BR. Thats going to be the rifle that I will be learning to shoot F-class with.

If I were looking to get a .308 I would buy a Model 12 F-TR. You get a 30" barrel and a 6oz. trigger. Savages seem to shoot very well out of the box. Cabelas has them on for $1139.

All Bull Meadow and Homestead ranges, lots of Remingtons on the firing line. Savages are well represented too.

Edit: No matter what the action 99.9% of these rifles have custom after market barrels.

The Tikka's come with very good trigger in general, that can be turned down to 1.5 to 2 lbs and breaks crisp to the learning finger. Occasionally I can feel just a touch of creep in it, but I prefer two stage triggers anyways. I had a 223 T3 that would shoot one hole groups with ease at 100, and do regret selling it a little. Sold it to get another T3V in a different caliber that I'm enjoying very much when I can get out to shoot it.

The Savage is also a good option, and is a fairly modular system. They can be set up to be a 'switch barrel' if you so convince yourself that you'll 'save money' by getting a 223 barrel to compliment a larger bore barrel. They are accurate, and I find the accutrigger to be very satisfactory. Again, it's like a faux two stage, and I like the feel of some takeup before breaking the shot. I bought one 'just to try' for a while, and it quickly became a staple piece in the collection, along with the Tikka.

No idea about the other two, but I'd imagine that the R5 retains the least value with use. Just a guess though, nothing to back that opinion up. Seems like as soon as a barrel has 300 rounds through it it's well on it's way to being 'almost worn out' from a buyers perspective, if you decide to give another flavor a try down the road.
