I have read a lot of threads on the various 223s for some good bench rest precision shooting. I have narrowed my choices down to either the Tikka T3 Varmint or the Savage 12VSS Varminter. Both have had some excellent reviews and posts in the forums. Does anyone have some last minute input regarding these two Varminters prior to my purchase. Both have good rate of twist necessary for the 223s, 1 in 8 & 9 respectively. Does the AccuTrigger of the Savage warrant swaying in it's direction? Thanks for all replies.

Howdy and welcome!

The big thing about the the Savage versus the Tikka is the amount ao aftermarket stuff available for the Savage, such as stocks, triggers, barrels, and other dodads.
As far as accuraaccy goes, I think they are both very good, the Tikka has a smoother action.

I think the Tikka is a tad more expensive, but I am not sure.
As far as the Accutrigger goes, I wouldn't buy a Savage for that feature, but that is just me.
Ithers really like it a lot.
I'm sure you will be very happy with either, I have shot far more Savages than Tikkas, and both brands were very accurate....

I am sure the Tikka is more money but a very nice looking rifle. If you don't intend to modify later, the Tikka is an excellent choice. Otherwise, the Savage gives you many more options.

I now shoot Savages because for the difference in costs between this and Remchestika, I can swap in awesome aftermarket parts and have a better rifle. As to looks, I don't see anything wrong with the Savage action but others rate it less attractive.

both will shoot well.

Personally I'd buy a Stevens rifle just for the action in the calibre I wanted (so that boltface and mag match), then swap out the barrel, stock and trigger with aftermarket to build the gun I want.

I have an older Tikka M55 in .223, it shoots like a laser beam! An honest .75 moa every time is easy and is .5 moa capable when I am, with handloads..
That being said my next rifle will be a Savage- I can play with/modify more and parts are easy to obtain.
My Tikka trigger was easily adjusted to very light, and I'm sure you now know of the Savage accutrigger- so what do you like best, Chev or Ford?

here's another vote for the Tikka.
There are little things you can do to improve on an action. Yea... blueprint it... but to make any of them as smooth as a Tikka..... I've seen it done, but the cost is matching the rifle itself.
Good wood, accurate barrels.
The floating recoil lug is something that really got my interest.

Savage is definately a rifle you can play with.
I use the Tikka when the play is over and I want to hunt.

I have owned both and to be perfctly honest you are splitting hairs when it comes to which is best. Both are very good for the price. It is important to remember that we are talking about for the price. Neither is perfect but very good value for the money you will spend.
If I am splitting hairs I would buy the Savage for the availablity of enhancement parts.
example: The Accutrigger is ok but not even close to some of the after market triggers that are available. If you want to shoot Benchrest, that will probably be your first upgrade.
Either way, you will be starting with a very capable piece of equipment that will serve you well.
Good Luck with your purchase.

I wanted to buy an "out of the box" rifle to shoot from 100-300 yards as that is really all we can do in the GTA. I did a lot of research, talked to a lot of people and handled both rifles quite a bit. I assume that between the 2 rifles, you are refering to the 10FP McMillan and the T3. After extensive research, I went with a Savage with the McMillan. The barrel was heavier, I really like the Accu-trigger, the way Savage attaches the barrel with the lock nut is very strong and most of all, the McMillan stock is bar none the better one. I really liked both rifles, but for me, the Savage had the edge. Both rifles are very buildable if you want to eventually go that route, as any of the rifle builders on this site would tell you, but personally, I am very happy with my decision and would buy the Savage again.

Chose Savage

Thanks for all the feedback. Finally narrowed it down to the Savage 12BVSS. They are both supposed to shoot equally well, but I love the laminate stock of the Savage and the feel of the Accu-Trigger.Put a Bushnell 6-24 4200 series scope on it and went to the range with several boxes of PMC 69gr match cartridges (-9 degrees C, Brrr). Once I got it sighted in, WOW. Easily group under an inch at 100yds, with one in the .300s, several in the .400s and .500s, and most between .600 and 1.000. My groups that did go over 1" were do to a stray that was my error. Moved out to 200 yrds, best one was .858 several just a hair over 1" and few in the 1.7-1.8 range. Next shot a few groups at 300 yds, all ended up about 3" range. I was very satisfied with the results. Now all I need to do is start reloading and practice more to tighten up my groups.
