If he wants to go bigger, he should get a .300 Win Mag or a 7mm Rem Mag.

If he wants to go smaller, maybe a .270 or .308 would fit the bill.

There are so many choices...

is there a big diff in 7mm rem mag and 300 win mag? I don't have any charts on hand

NO

His next logical step up would be a 338 mag or even better a 375 H&H

The 300 mag, and especially the 7mm, will not give him very much "improvement" over his '06.

if you got a good 3006, which I assume that T3 is, then theres no real point in getting anything from 270 Winchester on up through the 300 Mags

338 Win Mag is the next "level"

25-06, 260, 7-08 are the next ones down to consider...

what about a 308?

Just consider that round as a "30-06 Lite" ;)

A good cartridge but again redundant if someone owns a good '06. LoL

You are facing the problem of a lot of 30-06 owners discover. The round is so versatile it makes most other cartridges needless.

To have somethign truley "different" you would have to drop down to the 243, 260, 7mm-08 class of cartridges or move up to 338 or larger.

The good news is that one doesn't have to "justify" a new rifle. Just go with whatever floats your bro's boat. (I for example once owned 5 different 30-06 rifles at the same time. ;) )

Reminds me of the old saying,

"There's nothing you can't fix with $700 or a 30-06." ;)

I recently helped a guy sight in his T3 lite in 338 win mag shooting 250 grain Partitions. It was not a pleasant gun to shoot off the bench. But was quite accurate. The fellow that owns it cannot shoot it, and therein lies a problem. Regards, Eagleye.

Thanks for the info guys.He was thinking of getting another in 30-06 again but he didn't know if it would be stupid to own two o6's. the thing is he going to be using this gun for deer most of the time so may be he shouldn't go big because he doesn't reload.
