Tikkas Stainless Steel

My kimber always has some rust on it after 10-14 days in the Bush. Some steel wool and g96 and its right as rain. Can’t imagine what a blued rifle would look like after 2 weeks in the off and on rain with no oil.

That is why its rusting you are contaminating the stainless with iron from the steel wool.Kimbers are less likely to rust as they use a different grade of stainless than Sako. You must have some iron contaminants on the stainless if it is spotting

That’s interesting! Out of the dozen or so I’ve had pass thru the safe id say a good half had rust spotting around the trigger guard and on the trigger shoe itself. And one 8400 with rust inside the action. Can’t say If those had ever got the steel wool treatment as almost all were second hand.

Used this to take surface rust off my savage stainless

How do you recommend getting rid of it other than steel wool? Scotch brite?

Wipe it with some stainless appliance cleaner and then some oil.
Are you around grinding dust, metal particles even off of your cloths .You are getting iron contamination from some where.Salt is also a bad one!I have seen rusty bores at the muzzle from road salt in the carpet of the truck.I believe there is stainless steel wool too .Not sure where to find it .

I bought a t3 with some light rust that was starting to pit. I made a paste from baking soda and water, then scrubbed the paste on the rust spots with a soft tooth brush. Once rust was gone I washed with soap and water, dried, and applied gun oil. I give my guns a wipe after hunting, haven't had an issue since.

Most hardware stores sell scrub pads that are synthetic...they are cheap, long lasting and you won't run into the iron deposits left behind from steel wool.

If you have a non polishing car wax in the garage, a quick wipe down of metal surfaces before the season sure helps alot as well.

I had a stainless Ruger MKII stolen from my cabin years ago. I suspected it was some kids that had been at a party about a km away and came up through a trail by the river, found my place and broke in.

Anyway that was in July. In April I was walking along the trail and saw something sticking out from the melting snow, it was my rifle. Kids had taken it and probably didn't know what to do with it so stashed it in the bushes. I took it apart and the only rust on it was a bit around the aftermarket Timney trigger. The synthetic stock was muddy but just needed a wash off. The rest of the rifle was fine, zero rust at all, after spending 8 or more months sitting in rain and snow. I thought that was pretty impressive.

I don't have stainless guns but I wax my rifles before taking them out for the season. Also protect the bore with electrical tape and fill all the screw heads with bow string wax.
