Hi there,

I've just received my new SKS (from Cabela's), and upon some quick inspection I noticed that the complete rear sight assembly is tilted right, like rotated around the barrel. I will not be able to take it to the range for some time to see if it shoots well anyway, but for the sake of good night sleep I'd like to know if the rear sight assembly can be rotated around to make it level with the rest of the rifle, or if there is anything else that can be done to fix it in case it is really out of whack. Thanks.

So basically, some guy at Cabela's looked at this screwed up rifle and thought "I'm going to ruin someone's day and send this to them."

More like some guy at cabelas didn't even look at this screwed up rifle...

At any rate, I would return/exchange it immediately. I assume that would be much easier to do with an unfired rifle.

Well, I must be going crazy,....just received a Mosin 91/30 from Westrifle and I see the same slight tilt to the right, although to a much less degree, almost negligible. Measuring the SKS sight with vernier I do see a 1/32 difference (side to side) from the flat portion of the barrel (where it attaches to the receiver), but I'm not sure how trustworthy that reference point on the barrel is (probably not at all). The difference measuring from the stock is even bigger, so maybe that is what throws my eye off even more. I guess the only sure way to see if anything is really wrong with the rifle is to take it to a range and try to hit something :) Looking at how the rear sight assembly is connected to both the receiver and the gas tube there seems to be no way to adjust the rear sight (or to knock it out of the alignment).

You got to understand that when these rifles were built it was under Cold War conditions...attention to detail, quality craftsmanship wasn't the primary objective was to pump out rifles as fast as possible, my suggestion is shoot the rifle the way it is and see how it shoots and if need be adjust the sights as need be....good luck.
