Background:

Over the past couple of years I've noticed I've introduced more new shooters using my SKS than any other rifle I own.

I suspect the primary reason has been the relatively inexpensive surplus ammunition.

I also noticed most people gravitated to my Butler Creek aftermarket stocked SKS instead of the factory equipped wooden stock - even though the plastic stocked rifle felt like it had more recoil than the factory wooden one.

They also seemed to shoot more accurate with the Butler Creek stock.

People just like shooting rifles that fit them better.

Wondering how I could make a good thing even better for new shooters - I started looking into aftermarket wooden stocks for the SKS.

Photo below is of my new Timbersmith stock from Tapco.
The difference between this new stock and the plastic aftermarket/wooden factory stock is like night and day.

Someone did their homework with this product - fit and finish is outstanding and the gun just feels "right".
Difficult to explain - but you know it when you feel it.

Swapped out trigger group for a Russian version that has little to no creep and a crisp (for an SKS) let-off.

Replaced the 5/20 round Tapco magazine for some ancient 5 round aftermarket mag I had sitting in a box for 15 years. I think it looks a lot nicer and may replace it with the factory fixed box magazine should the antique magazine prove problematic.

Hope to try it out next week prior to taking the next group of people from work out to the range.

Where did you get the timbersmith kit?

I too am curious as to where you purchased the stock.

I also agree ,it is a nice looking stock and does look comfortable to shoot.I`ve a got several(Chinese & Russian) SKSs and would like to try one of these out myself.

Cheers

OK ,I see them for 289.00 ,but these have a thumbhole stock ,not that I mind.So I guess Tapco makes two versions ?

I had contacted Hical months ago looking for a RH Monte Carlo Stock in brown. Was told that they didn't know when they were going to get any in as Tapco couldn't make them fast enough for the US market.

Was told to contact them again in 8 months to get an update on availability.

Other places I inquired about them did not have any in stock as well and couldn't give me an answer on when they would get any.

Just happened to check out a local gun store when I noticed a SKS decked out with the stock for sale on the rack. Asked them if they sold the stock separately and was surprised when they asked what colour I wanted it in.

Decided I liked he brown version over the black one and two bills later I walked out of the store with a cardboard box tucked under my arm.

I handled one, a black one, many times at CT and it is very comfy. I kinda felt it was toooo nice, toooo smooth for such a rugged gun. I questioned how it would take bumps and bruises actually. But they do feel nice in your hands.

I have tried every stock damn near for the sks and it feels so good. So comfortable to shoot, and not as short. Very well built and the best thing about them is they have little pins in the gas tube cover so it never moves. Nice and sturdy.
