Martin's "Handgun Ban" is now being widely reported as giving handgun owners classified as collectors five years to sell their guns, surrender them, or become target shooters. Add to that the Provincial opt in/out option and the whole thing really begins to look like a smokescreen designed to take public attention away from Gomery and the insider trading scandal. Sure it will garner a few more votes in crime plagued Toronto but those ridings are pretty much a Liberal lock anyway. I think Ontario is the one area where a "ban" has the greatest likelihood of becoming a reality given the already gun-unfriendly attitudes found there. I don't doubt that there are a lot of people who would like to see private gun ownership eliminated, but it will likely be a death by a thousand cuts rather than a draconian across the board ban. The proposed "ban" serves to further divide the Canadian firearms community by separating target shooters from collectors. "It doesn't bother me if they go after collectors, I am a target shooter." Next it will be large caliber pistols, after all who really need a .44 to shoot paper. Then semi-auto rifles and shotguns. Grandfather current owners and the sport will die a slow, but largely uncomplaining death as each year there are fewer shooters in the categories. But back to your question, no I don't think you will have to get rid of your handgun, but do move out of Ontario if possible. Sorry for the semi-rant.
