What do you use for a respirator when smelting?

As long as you just melt it and don't boil the lead there is no problem and no respirator needed.
Hard to do to get it to boil since the melting point is about 330 celcius and boiling point 1750 celcius.


More of a concern is handling the lead with your hands.

What Bert said. This is pewter though, which is even less toxic than lead.

Have never worn a mask even when I did some work in a place that made the lead plates for batteries. #1 was wash you hands, #2 keep you bugger hooks out of any of your holes until you have done a good wash up.
90% of lead enters through the mouth.

As always, eye protection a must

Hey Yomamma! Those two pics you posted were excellent. My compliments!
My casting/smelting partner Eric & I scoured many 2nd hand stores to aquire pewter. Lots of grandma's treasures got smelted into mini-ingot medallions for the same use as you.
I bought this single pewter ornate chalis a couple years ago that I just couldn't bring myself to melt. It was exquisite. Some pewter crafters had real talent.....
