I have a 300WM on a Win mod. 70 action, MPI stock and a Bevon King SS match barrel. I originally got it in 1-9 twist to shoot the 240gr. MK. Since then Ive gone to the 208gr. A-Max and the 200gr. Sierra SBT for hunting. Its liked them both quite well. Now a few thousand rounds later the throat is about had it again as Ive set it back once already. Now Im looking at a Krieger barrel, same caliber but twisted for a good LR hunting bullet and in 27" to give me an inch for a future set back. Also Id like it throated for seating the bullets to fit the magazine and at the same time bieng close the the lands or even jammed, whichever is most accurate for the bullet of choice.
I know theres better calibers for this choice but Ive got all the set up for 300WM already and future plans for a 300 RUM build on a custom action.
Knowledge and input appreciated.

What would you like to know specifically? I'm assuming the rifle will be for hunting? As to barrels, it is really a question of the preferred contour, and that will be a question of what you would like in tems of the stock and in terms of what you are prepared to carry aound.

If weight is an issue, I would strongly recommend chromoly steel. Krieger will not produce stainless 30 cal barrels less than a #5 Bull Sporter out of concerns for the cartridge and temperatures for which the barrel will ultimately be used. You can get as light a contour as you like in CM steel - it just needs to be blued or coated to prevent rust.

In terms of twist, a 300 WM is plenty of horsepower and you need not use anything tighter than a 11.25 twist for 220 or less hunting bullets. More twist is just going to mean more torque, not more stability.

As to the use of a magazine, well that is a discussion to have with the plumber, as he can throat the chamber in a manner that will be more conducive to accuracy with short-seated bullets.

If setting back is an option you want to keep in mind, the barrel shank of a varmint/target profiles is 5" aand this will make setting back much easier.

I was figuring on a 27" with a 5" shank, straight taper to a .750" crown. Bullet weights will be 200gr. and up. I might look into Bergers or something along those lines. I just dont like to work up a load for a specific bullet then have difficulty getting it. The bbl. will definatly be SS match quality.

Either a #18 light target or a #19 hunter contour will fit the bill. We can have it brought in to whatever specs you want. Special contours are no extra charge generally.

Cheers,

Ian

You can also install a long (full H&H Length) magazine box and follower which will allow you to seat the 210 Berger and 208 AMax out to touch the lands and still cycle through the magazine. There is only a slight modification to the ejector and the rear of the feed rails to ensure proper feeding. Both are easy to do. I did both mods at home. If you have some aptitude and patience you can do a good job. If not (ie you have a Dremel and aren't afraid to use it) you're best to have the plumber do the work for you.
