Hi everyone,

Last winter i bought a used Ruger 10/22 off the EE with a BSA Sweet 22 3-9x40 scope. I PM'd with the seller back and forth quite a bit and he raved about the accuracy of the set up. A while later i picked up a used Hogue stock for her and swapped it out and figured i was good to go.

However i can't get the darn scope sighted in. I mentioned that i swapped the stock on the extremely remote chance that has something to do with it, but essentially this should be the same set up the seller raved about. I have since emptied my inbox though and i don't remember the seller's username.

I can put 3 shots through the same hole at 25 yards no problem, just not where I'm aiming! It is hitting about 5" too low at 10 yards and 8" at 25. At 25 yards i have about 1.5" worth of adjustment in elevation but obviously nowhere near enough to correct whatever is going on.

Not sure what brand the rings are and it's a standard 10/22 scope rail. I haven't tried taking the rings off or anything other than removing and replacing the whole scope/ring set up to ensure that it's seated properly.

I've only set up a few scopes in my day but never had an issue like this before. I'm hoping it is purely operator error or something simple like the dilithium crystals' harmonic is bleeding power from the structural integrity field.

Any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks CGN!

That would be unfortunate. The picture is crystal clear and i like the features. I emailed BSA and they said they'd take a look for the price of return postage. But the grouse are calling my name now and i need something accurate at spitting distance!

Sigh...

My BSA worked good on my 10/22, then one day was shooting and the crosshairs looked like eyelashes . Bass pro did not carry that model still , be still gave me store credit a year later . Tried one of their store models and it failed . I'm now using a Tasco 3-9x32 from Can tire . So far works great.

I would take a good look at how it was mounted. If the rifle has a barrel mounted rear sight make sure the scope isn't resting on it. If its isn't then try swapping the rings around. If that doesn't do it then eithe the scope base or receiver is a little out of spec. Shimming the rear of the scope base will fix it. That is all assuming the scope is good. It takes very little misalignment to get a scope pointing too far off to zero properly. There's always a fix, just gotta narrow down the problem first.

Thanks all. I will fidget with it a bit and if i can't figure it out it will be off to the factory and i'll be throwing rocks at the bush chickens this season!

...unless i could figure out a way to farm up one of my red dots to fit the rail...

Rocks or sticks are always a good option for chickens. My wife almost ran over one while we were out for a bike ride at the cottage.
Stupid birds.....

I had my scope mounted all crooked once, when I didn't notice the clamp became crossed up on the rail, so it ended up torquing the whole scope. If it helps I had to take the rings off and start from scratch, then remount the scope. Failing that, if there is nothing touching the barrel and causing a problem there, then the scope being toast is a likely possibility. Did you ever try a tracking test with the scope? It's worth a go.

Well based on what i heard here and read elsewhere online, i figured i had nothing to lose so i removed the retaining screws on the turrets, not knowing what kind of microscopic spring-loaded parts awaited flying across the room. Thankfully there weren't any and sure enough with the screws removed i just kept cranking on the dials until the crosshairs lined up with my laser bore sighter. She's good to go for ~10 yards as far as i can tell now (good enough for grouse anyway) but i will find out for sure when i get her to the range. So it wasn't the dilithium crystals or the flux capacitor after all!

Thank you all for your input, cheers!

I was thinking extreme misalignment between the receiver and barrel but it couldn't be that extreme?? Your scope has got to be fubar. :p

It could be...
Is the barrel free floating in your Hogue replacement stock? The 10-22 factory stock has a pressure point to support the barrel up. Maybe swap the stocks and see what you get with the original factory stock.

I had a similar issue with my old 10-22. I tried to free float the barrel and it kept drooping as I was sanding the barrel channel. I ended up gluing the barrel in with Loctite before tightening the barrel in the action!

Well for the benefit of those following this thread or searching it in the future, removing the retaining screws from the turrets and adjusting them until the scope was zeroed worked. I assume if I could find a manual for the dang scope it would likely suggest as much, for with the screws in there is really only very minimal room to adjust windage and elevation. Anyway, I was shooting dime sized groups at 15 yards and inch and a half at 75 last night. Definitely good enough for grouse!

Thanks for all your comments CGN, cheers!
