Tiny pin fell out of my Rem 700VLSS

After a trigger jo, the safety was jammed - gunsmith figured it was some locktite that had leaked into the mechanism, so he tapped it free with a small mallet.

Action worked fine, safety fine, trigger fine - so I took it home.

I got home & pulled it out to install a scope, and a tiny pin (1/16" dia) fell out of the area where the safety is. Its clearly sheared off (you can see on the metal) - I figure it was what had jammed the safety & it got sheared off when he tapped it free.

Any idea what it is? I can't see inside to see where it broke off from - I will bring it back to the smith. Basically would like to find out what it is (ie: how important) before I go. Everything seems to work fine, but it may be a safety issue.

Thanks for any help

Bolt stop lever pin slid out a little? There is nothing on a Remington trigger that should be made "free" with a mallet. There may be more to this than you are aware of - suggest you find another gunsmith and take your rifle in to have it examined ... explain what happened. This might have been simply removing extraneous debris ... but sounds VERY odd.

Thanks - will do.

It's a really tiny part (1/16" dia by 1/8" long)- and it definitely broke off (you can see fractured metal) - pain in the butt.

Here is an exploded diagram of the rifle. There are 2 small pins in the trigger assembly. The trigger pin and the safety pivot pin. If you take the barrel and action out of the stock you should be able to determine where it came from.

ETA, you'll have to copy and paste the link.

any smith that would use enough locktite to leak into the mechanism really doesn't know what he is doing. Likely had the safety in the wrong position when he put the pins back in and broke something with the hammer.
Have someone competent check it out.

Took it back in - I figure the guy knows what he's doing & just missed something - he'll take it apart & check it out - he's normally very picky

I'll post results -

Thanks for everyone's input -

There is a small pin used to hold the sear down to keep it from flopping when the trigger assembly is removed from the action. With an existing assembled rifle the gunsmith may have made up a substitute to do the same job. The pin is removed when trigger is reassembled to the action to allow the sear to rise under spring pressure to engage the cocking piece. Perhaps this is what you've encountered.

Your gunsmith made an undersized pin most likely and forgot to remove it after assembly. First time the bolt was closed on it it took the spring tension off and it simply fell out. If he'd paid attention he probably should have seen the bolt didn't #### that time. Maybe never even tested it. The factory pin that comes with a new trigger is full width of the housing and near full diameter of the hole (slip fit) and usually needs a slight push to remove it.
